Abisko Sky Station is about an hour out of Kiruna if that is an option. I was lucky enough to see the lights five nights out of seven there on two seperate trips. The locals told me that Lapporten nearby apparently helps keep the sky clear.

I used to stay at the Doubletree Old Town when I had layovers in Doha. Friendly staff, quiet hotel, comfortable rooms.

This was going to be my recommendation. Plenty to do and a good time of year weather wise. Hualien Gorge would be my strong recommendation whilst you are there and there's plenty to do in Taipei and immediate surrounds.

Out of interest, what has gone on to the shortlist? I am always keen to consider new short trips and may be able to suggest some more (depending on where you have been).

Thanks for your advice @penguino - I am. Not too fussed on the class, it's the daytime flight that is important to us. I have picked up the flexible dates trick which is handy the downside is the inability to see the flights that we want and not the Jetstar redeye via DPS. I will keep fiddling...

Another vote for Lisbon. Great architecture, a bit of warmth, great day trips (Sintra, Quinta la reguleira) and some stunning food. Loved Jeronimos Monastery and Pastel de Nata next door.
