United Airlines new Virgin Australia / Velocity Partner

Considering it took 10 years for points upgrades on Delta to become a reality, my guess is 2030. (What can I say, I'm an optimist! ;) ) I would not expect this anytime soon, it's very low on the priority list for airline partnerships and probably a pain to implement.

United Airlines new Virgin Australia / Velocity Partner

Agreed, if people expect Guam (or anywhere in Micronesia) to be full of activities catering to tourists or with plentiful high-end resorts, they'll be sorely disappointed. But I found that part of the world to be an amazing place to travel. The biggest reason I'd say a connection in GUM is...

United Airlines new Virgin Australia / Velocity Partner

I wouldn't wait to book anything. The partnership will be what it is regardless. You'll just add the VA number to your UA booking when it starts. Points upgrades between partners historically take ages to get going. We'll be lucky if you can upgrade a UA flight with Velocity points by the end...

United Airlines new Virgin Australia / Velocity Partner

The DL partnership had this too, until the breakup started. (Don't tell anyone but Velocity status still gets you domestic itinerary Skyclub access as of March 2022, I can personally vouch for that)

United Airlines new Virgin Australia / Velocity Partner

It seems like those whispers always are there with a new partnership, but the implementation of partner upgrades has always been clunky at best. And usually involves high base fares to be eligible. Don't forget DL and VA had this already, yet it was pretty difficult to manage...

    Can't achieve segments outside Australia

I doubt there are many. The lounges almost never know what Velocity is. But it was a decent program if you wanted lounge access and didn't care about First Class upgrades. VA does make money when people fly Delta, Delta would pay for the Velocity points. Although VA would pay for lounge access...

    Can't achieve segments outside Australia

Definitely. They took away Comfort+ upgrades some time ago. So now the benefits are limited to baggage check lines and the limited benefit of preferred seating (I often buy Comfort+ anyway). And since I carry-on regularly and have TSA Pre check that's not a huge benefit. Oh well

    Can't achieve segments outside Australia

Happy to report that I received an email reply thanking me for my continued flying in 2021 and confirming an automatic extension of my Platinum status for another year. Thanks all.

    Can't achieve segments outside Australia

Thanks for that. I guess I will shoot them an email. I was a little worried that there is a problem with me being a Velocity member and residing outside AU. Hopefully they would understand the situation though given all the restrictions. If I were staying in the US, Gold would actually be...

    Can't achieve segments outside Australia

Hi all, I've been a VA Platinum for 4 years. I was based in Australia that entire time but worked in the US for a few months (3-5 trips) a year. Obviously it isn't possible to travel between the US and Australia realistically. So late last year I relocated (intended to be temporary) to the US...

Experience with Australian border controls leaving the country

It sounds like they have clarified. Previously there was no published criteria (it just said Australians that weren't normally resident were exempt), but anecdotally they said the test was >50% of days outside Australia in the last year. Maybe I am wrong but my take on the new wording is that...

Experience with Australian border controls leaving the country

I'm sitting at LAX now. What a hectic journey. I spent Sunday night at the Rydges SYD airport. The hotel is an absolute disaster, I was dreading having to have a long wait there, but that's another story. Monday at around 5:45a I walked to the terminal and found the border patrol agents that...

Experience with Australian border controls leaving the country

No word yet. I called and they took my information, said they would look into it. They didn't offer any explanation or advice, other than to watch my Spam folder :/. I won't by flying today I've already decided, the exemption is good for a later flight and I can fly Monday, so I plan to go...

Experience with Australian border controls leaving the country

That would be illegal even under normal circumstances. You must use your AU Passport to depart Australia. It's really best you don't try to offer me any more advice, thanks. I'm looking for ways to get an answer from the government on exemptions. Not try to get around them. The process may be...

Experience with Australian border controls leaving the country

I am both a US and AU citizen. AU citizens residing in Australia and permanent residents of Australia are banned from leaving the country without an exemption. The fact that I am also a US citizen makes no difference to that regulation.

Experience with Australian border controls leaving the country

I'm currently struggling in this process. Dual citizen US/AU I have a business contract with a USA company that requires me to be on site. It's the only current contract my company holds (AU contracts cancelled or suspended). I have managed so far but clearly I can't keep the contract unless I...

Tokyo Haneda slot - how will Virgin Operate it?

There are lots of unknowns for sure. Capacity overall will need to reduce. DL has retired their 777s, will they fly to SYD with the smaller A350, or not at all? QF had two A380s daily on some routes. That definitely won't be happening anymore. It's my opinion that the 'new' VA will want to make...

Tokyo Haneda slot - how will Virgin Operate it?

VA's LAX operations were profitable before, very important for domestic feed, and the DL partnership. They also own all but 1 of their 777s. I'd expect some operations to LAX to be in the reorganized airline. MEL may lose its direct, but there will be something. HND? Not likely...

OT: has the VA emblem been removed from the VA planes that are still flying? [NO]

VA can't afford to take the names off, even if they wanted to!
