Pandemic Travel – The Great Escape to Canada (and back, we hope!)

Hardly a J class breakfast but what can you do! Another day another empty airline cabin!

Pandemic Travel – The Great Escape to Canada (and back, we hope!)

Sorry for the lack of pictures on the Embraer flights, we had quite a lot going on and the trip was quite hectic! Boarding the 787 back to Australia we were happy it was their new Polaris J config which got switched onto the route at the very last minute, we had resigned ourselves to the old...

Pandemic Travel – The Great Escape to Canada (and back, we hope!)

Coming back from YVR to SFO a couple of months later was thankfully a much nicer experience. Same aircraft, much nicer crew and we were flying F (then Business on the SFO/SYD leg back home). Nothing much to add, apart from the Embraer First seats were much more comfortable than the concrete Y+...

Pandemic Travel – The Great Escape to Canada (and back, we hope!)

Long time between posts.... a very big project came up that vampired all my time away! So, the United Express Embraer service from SFO to YVR. A big come down after a lovely flight across the ditch from Sydney that's for sure. First of all, the US was a big shock. People paying no attention...

How do Hilton treat you as an Elite?

Date: June 2021 Hotel: Hilton Vancouver Downtown Booked: King 1-Bedroom Suite (Junior Suite) city view Received: King 1-Bedroom Suite (Junior Suite) water view Status: Gold I’m not a huge Hilton fan to be honest find them bland and boring in general, but the staff at this one were some of the...

Pandemic Travel – The Great Escape to Canada (and back, we hope!)

Arriving into SFO we arrived to a busier than Sydney terminal, but still very quiet. We had the luck of arriving at the same time as a flight from India, so we were very careful about social distancing and our PPE was at its maximum game! Although not busy, SFO immigration was operating at its...

Fatty chicken slop Actually quite a nice antipasto box. We were given as many as we wanted. Edible sandwiches were also provided to supplement the slop :)

Pandemic Travel – The Great Escape to Canada (and back, we hope!)

United international catering in Y+ certainly is how I remembered it - awful. Lunch was some gristly chicken slop - inedible and some pretzels, mini tim tam and some spinach leaves. One bit of the chicken slop and it was set aside :) The flight attendents were good enough to be embarrased to...

Pandemic Travel – The Great Escape to Canada (and back, we hope!)

Finally we found our ride to SFO, a United 787 at a far flung gate as far away as you could get, waiting patiently for us as it was loaded to the gills with freight bound for the US. It sure wouldn't be making any money off passengers! Once on board we arrived to our section and as promised...

Thirsty? Too bad. A little annoying as this bird was heading to YVR directly but not taking passengers…. :( Leaving us to navigate the United States of Covid… We seriously thought about knocking on the door as asking the pilots for a ride ;)

A shop! Open! Quick take a photo. No customers though, some desperate looking staff eyed us off as we walked past. So much space, so little people.

Despite no people, check in took ages! They really should turn some screens off and save some power!

Apologies all for the delay in posting this up, has been a little hectic and interesting to navigate through two foreign countries in various stages of pandemics and lockdowns! Thank you for your messages of concern, we are just fine :) ---- An early morning rise for our United international...

Pandemic Travel – The Great Escape to Canada (and back, we hope!)

D day approached very quickly actually and to be honest have never been so prepared for a trip ever. Mostly I don’t really think twice about travel, having done so much through work and life but this trip needed so much checking and double checking and monitoring it was quite tiring. First leg...

So with our exemptions all lined up (with a massive touchwood nothing else changes) and our fingers crossed we prepared for our military style operation to leave Fortress Australia. With all the paperwork, consulate requirements, exemptions, visas, first 14 day arrival plans etc etc – we built...

Pandemic Travel – The Great Escape to Canada (and back, we hope!)

I wouldn't call it much fun given the absolute mess of a situation Canada is in right now.... but I will take the smooth sailing wishes :) Things have changed since your friends travelled, now all OS arrivals by air must go into hotel quarantine for up to 3 days (until your airport test comes...

Yes good point and I wouldn't have paid for 'Premium Economy' in this scenario with United either - because they don't really have one by our APAC definition of Premium Economy, its just a little extra leg room and a seperate cabin on the 787, thats it. We were upgraded without charge.

Pandemic Travel – The Great Escape to Canada (and back, we hope!)

So as everyone knows, the rules changed for Hong Kong crew and quarantine requirements between flights.... without getting into the details, the net result was that almost overnight Cathay went from becoming a reliable option to a highly unreliable one as they began cancelling and reducing...
