What's the point? [VA fares > 50% more than Jetstar]

That is very interesting; thank you very much for your research and analysis.

What's the point? [VA fares > 50% more than Jetstar]

I agree 100% with principle of what you wrote, but I note you still presume Bain is interested in the 'long-term' game. I take a guess that Bain is not in it for long term: make as much as you can before it hits the fan and move on quickly... ('Infinite game' versus 'finite game' in...

What's the point? [VA fares > 50% more than Jetstar]

I enjoyed reading your post (as always). One fundamental assumption in your post is that Bain's 'strategic goal' would include 'sustainability of the business', 'long-term growth', 'being competitive in the marketplace', and the like. I think we may need to rethink their strategic objective...

What's the point? [VA fares > 50% more than Jetstar]

You are correct in that one is probably better off getting 'any' value out of VFF (and run). But I propose that buying a toaster gives one a value similar to using the points for Points+Pay; and I further propose a toaster is a longer-lasting "value" than a flight you might not have taken if it...

What's the point? [VA fares > 50% more than Jetstar]

There are a plethora of articles about the 'value' of points. As a general rule of thumb, the best value is had when booking 'classic' rewards in business or first class for long-haul flights. Also, 'classic' rewards in domestic business gives you good value (if that is your thing). At times...

What's the point? [VA fares > 50% more than Jetstar]

Agree on your 1st paragraph. True that VA, in distant past, used to represent much better value due to the fact you have stated in your 2nd paragraph. Although I like to note that in the last year or so of VA Mk I, new fees and charges were introduced, almost on par with those of QF (a little...

What's the point? [VA fares > 50% more than Jetstar]

AustralianPoochie, this is THE absolute worst use of the points. I will not use my points for Points+Pay unless I have ZERO other option and ZERO time left; and even then I will feel cheated.

Yoooo Hoooo (maybe?) -- Virgin Platinum for another year!

Milefast did write "...burn my points...", but I don't think this is what he had in mind; using Point plus Pay is one of the poorest forms of using your points (not that much better than not having the points at all).

CBR Spring get together, 16 September ‘20 to hopefully celebrate 2 months clear of Covid.

    Good thing I don’t have a PhD in anything math-related 🤦‍♂️😂😂

Just got approved for amex plat but was declined for reserve

What Sam said, but in my case, it was all done over one phone call to Amex (reducing limit of one card and approving the Reserve to the same limit as the reduction on the other card). But of course both cards were AmEx. If you want to do this on a non-AmEx card, and want to reduce the risk of...

Transit in Brisbane airport - can I stay at a hotel?

You fill out and sign a declaration, which is deemed making a legal statement. Penalties to making false statements are stipulated in there, and I presume (and I hope) they are large enough to provide tangible deterrence. A few will try their luck, but throw the books at them and then people...

QantasLink centralises 717 maintenance facilities to Melbourne, rejigs fleet bases in preparation for border openings

Same here. I especially like 717s in J, as they are some of the quietest planes around...

Transit in Brisbane airport - can I stay at a hotel?

There is no merit in that 'story' as a justification to declare ACT a hot spot. As part of arrival into QLD, one needs/needed to show ID. They could have easily restricted arrivals from ACT to ACT residents (verifiable via their driver license for example).

Transit in Brisbane airport - can I stay at a hotel?

Yep, a 'hot spot' with zero active cases for longer than any other state or territory including QLD

AA wants to talk to me about my miles balance

Regardless of how legit the email looks and/or how many of the links in the email point to legit sites, never EVER use the information in the email to reach back. ALWAYS use direct/publicly available contact details to contact the company.

    Easier way to view flights?

Hi there, I am not sure if I can help with the flying part of the problem you're facing, but I am also Canberra based and I am always happy for a coffee, lunch or dinner. Give me a yell if you like someone to talk to, or someone to listen to...

What happens if you cancel an Amex with negative points balance?

If a bank does something unethical, I am not obliged to reciprocate; I try to be the best *I* can be. Having said that, I think most (all?) banks have more or less the same policy (i.e. points forfeited if not transferred out before or within a set period after closing the account). I have...

What happens if you cancel an Amex with negative points balance?

I am sorry if it came across as 'personal'; I was just making a generic comment. Talk to AmEx, maybe?
