COVID-19 and Tennis

Wonder how many Novak fans are like him anti-vaxers? That would prevent the biggest nutcases from attending
Depends on whether they have the ‘exemption/exceptions‘ whatever so they too follow the leader … we had a theory that last year was the worst as there was no interstate /overseas /corporates so we thought TA just threw a net off the back of a tram and whatever got scraped up was allowed in. (we all remember the Jane H booing).
I may sound a little snobby but having gone to lots of finals - it was bad.
If only it was like Wimbledon!!

Making the decision as close as possible to the actual deportation, outside of business hours, would be a good start in making it as difficult as possible for them to lodge an injunction application and get it heard before take off, as well as minimising the risk of violent demonstrations by rabid fans.

EK409 takes off at 2230. Make the deportation announcement at 2235.

And if the Czech doubles player is going to seek compensation from Tennis Australia why doesn't Novax just jump on that bandwagon? TA will be far more interested in keeping him on side than Varacova, although the fact that he sneaked his way flouting rules around Serbia and Spain in December and landed himself in today's mess is hardly TA's fault.

Why Djoker decision is being delayed

There is no decision in Australia as hotly anticipated as Alex Hawke’s on whether to deport World No. 1 tennis player Novak Djokovic or not.

While there was no news on Thursday except for a press conference from Prime Minister Scott Morrison where he refused to be drawn into the drama, much to the fury of the world’s media who have been waiting on tenterhooks for the decision.

But the wait will drag into another day at least as 7 News’ Robert Ovadia said it is “almost certain” a decision will be reached tomorrow.

As the Australian Open starts on Monday, the decision has to be made soon.

“The problem for the delay we’ve advised is the intricacy of the legal advice,” he said. “Alex Hawke has sought legal advice externally and also within his own department. Externally, there is conflicting advice — you can get rid of him, no you can’t. Internally in his own department the advice is ambiguous too so not an easy job ahead for the Immigration Minister.”

Reactions: DC3
I find it perverse that a state government is allowed to mandate vaccines or kick people out of their own private work, while part finding and completely facilitating this event with djokovic as a star attraction

I'm just getting that sad sinking feeling about the Immigration Minister's powers to get the job done. Makes it sound like a dead horse - not a comment on the person/politics, just their legal power/'prerogative' to expel a person.

More from the PM's press conference earlier

Just looking back over the transcript and parts of this answer stick out from the end of the press confernece. While he said he would not be commenting on the Novak Djokovic case, he does speak generally about unvaccinated entrants to Australia and does not hint at any relaxing of the rules.
JOURNALIST: Prime Minister, today, you noted that double dose vaccination is a requirement to enter Australia. Does your government still regard unvaccinated non-citizen, non-residents as a potential threat to public health? And should such a person keep an Australian visa if they were allowed in?
PRIME MINISTER: Well, given the other matters that are being considered at the moment, all I will simply say is that the reason we've had since the 15th of December, where fully vaccinated eligible visa holders could travel to Australia without needing to apply for a travel exemption and to enter those states that were allowing them to enter quarantine free. That individual has to show that they're double vaccinated or must provide acceptable proof that they cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons. That is the policy. That policy hasn't changed. That is the policy. And of course, we would expect authorities to be implementing the policy of the government when it comes to those matters. Now that relates to people who are coming to Australia. So these are non-citizens, non-residents, they're visa holders, and they may have acquired a visa recently. They may have acquired a visa some time ago and be returning when some of these issues weren't even stand at the time. And so that's why it's important we have to distinguish between the visa and then the condition to enter the border. They're not one and the same thing, and they're often conflated and shouldn't be. They are two things. You can have a visa, just like you can be a citizen or a resident returning and the condition for you to come in and what happens after that will depend on vaccination status and so on. If you're a citizen, a resident, of course, you can come back into your own country, but you would be able to have to quarantine in those circumstances. If you're not a citizen or resident, then the health rules we have in place to protect our borders and our border protection policies have been central to the government's achievements when it comes and Australia's achievements more generally and having one of the lowest death rates, strongest economies and highest vaccination rates in the world.

Nah, he will try his hardest to win. But if Nadal is not playing at the Open, he would have left willing. If he leaves and Nadal wins the Open ......
I thought Nadal was only playing in the doubles, due to fitness?

EDIT: I found that's chopped and changed since December, and he is now confirmed in the singles draw

SPAIN NOT INVESTIGATING DJOKOVIC

Spanish authorities have rejected reports that they are investigating Djokovic over his recent entry into the country.

Reports emerged on Thursday that the 20-time major winner was under investigation after travelling from Serbia to Spain, where he practiced ahead of travelling to Australia.

Tennis reporter Gaspar Ribeiro Lanca tweeted on Thursday: “Breaking news: COPE reports that the Spanish Government is now investigating whether unvaccinated Novak Djokovic entered the country illegally in late December. Since September 20, citizens from Serbia need a vaccine certificate OR a special exemption to enter Spanish territory but so far the authorities say they did not receive any request from Djokovic.”

However, these reports have now been refuted.

“The news is false. Neither the government has ordered it nor is there any police investigation open on the athlete,” a spokesperson for Spain’s interior ministry told Politico.
