Strategy to obtain US Amex

Great thread with lots of good information here. Anyone know the answer to this? If I apply for a US Amex Card with my Itin and my Itin then expires due to the three year rule, will I need to renew my Itin if I'd apply for a new card with Amex?

Anyone know a easy way to renew my Itin without sending in my passport to IRS?

Also wonder if it's possible to pay US Amex invoices with Wise and set it to direct debit? Think have read so before but just double checking.

I have today my Itin number since last year but I've realised my UK Amex Bonvoy Card is pretty cheap for just 75£ and gives me 15 elite nights to my Bonvoy account every year. I'm not sure it's worth it to pay 500£ more for two US Amex cards for just another 15 elite nights, though don't want to go through the hassle with IRS again.
Travels have been very small during pandemic so I suppose it depends how kind Marriott will be this year and extend my Titanium status once again for another year for the whole 2023 or not. Having a baby last year haven't really added trips either :p

EIN Express, or Daniel Hagen, would both be able to do the renewal process fairly painlessly I would expect. No need for sending the passport anywhere when Daniel Hagen submitted my Form7.

I’m using Amex autopay for my monthly Aspire payments with Wise.

My understanding is not to let the ITIN expire, while you have a use for it.

Edit: I would assume that Amex would verify an ITIN/SSN when processing applications

Does the itin expire ? How do you prevent it from expiring ?

Hi everyone and Happy New Year,

I‘ve just tried applying for my first US Amex card and I‘ve failed.

I set up a myUS account, got a TextNow number, filled the application form and then got a message asking me to call Amex.

They asked for my SSN. I explained I don’t have a SSN but do have a UK Amex card. They took the number but then they said they needed to verify my US address… they suggested a conference call with my US bank (don’t have one) or send me a link to upload one. I can’t access the link because it asks for a valid SSN (have tried all zeros or 123456789) though it’ll be pointless since I don’t have any proof of address at all…

Good luck to future applicants!

You did not apply by using the Global Transfer method? GT does not need a SSN.

Edit: Also, as you are ‘moving’ to the US, you would not necessarily have a bank account as yet

Turns out Safari on iPad was playing up and didn’t show me the pop up to login when I ticked the ‘don’t have a SSN’ box.

Anyway the customer rep made clear that wasn’t the issue. They want to verify the myUS address.

I could try again though not sure if they’re going to like multiple applications within 24 hours…

Bad luck with that. It may be that you got to speak with someone who knows nothing about GT. Most Amex reps would have no idea. You could wait for another month or so, and try again, but trying a different browser perhaps. Maybe another AFFer will have another idea. This wouldn’t be the first time that this has happened.

Actually I gave him my current UK Amex card number and he said it was valid for Global Transfer. Then raised the problem with the address. Maybe next month I should try with another forwarder like 247parcel? I could also try and apply outside of US business hours, would that avoid a manual review?

Which phone number did you call? I got this through the chat 1-866-929-5160 so will call tomorrow and talk to them. The Business card application page is broken and not fetching my British and Swedish Amex credentials at all resulting in checking my ITIN's credit score which is 0. The regular Amex card for Personal fetched everything just fine but I don't need that card.

1-800-221-4950. It’s the number I got at the end of the application workflow.

Business card applications need SSN/ITIN, and not by GT? Is that correct? Just from memory. On second thoughts, maybe I’m wrong about that. 😉

It should be possible to do a GT with ITIN for a business card, as I've read... I'll report tomorrow :)

Not urgent at the moment, but I assume in the case of the Hilton Surpass card it is not sent as an express package, just a mail envelope.

Could get lucky and MyUS approves it as something to be sent, but MyUS doesnt offer mail services anymore it looks like, so a different service is needed.

I logged in to my Australian Amex account then switched over to the US version. The US site recognised my Australian account, then it got marked as a global transfer. Looks like it wasn't an automatic approval, so I think you at least need a US bank statement with a US address (which is actually not hard to change) to get it through.

Hopefully, it’s something simple that they need to check. My second Amex GT credit card approval (six months ago) was not automatic, but they just wanted to verify my ID (not address, or bank details). When I spoke with Amex (with TextNow US phone number) the CSO saw straight away that I already had an Aspire card, so approved. There are posts upthread where passport number was sufficient for ID.

There are posts upthread about waiting at least 10 days, and then requesting that a replacement card be sent straight to an Oz address, as you are travelling. Might be worth looking into.

The first card for a product needs to be sent to a US address( friend or relative`s address ?) .But if its the very first card one needs to receive it and share the details. one can then wait 10 days for a replacement card to be sent overseas.
