Virgin Australia Business Class - Meals, Menus & Service

I came across this this evening when looking for other photos, as I thought VA1 was better than the 'new and improved' VA2. This offering (early-mid 2019) was not one of VA 1's finest but still better than VA2.

CNS-BRE morning flight

Had the choice of a crossiant with smoked salmon and capers and something else, but they had me at salmon, so frankly I blanked out after that. It was enjoyed so much by my little travel companion on my lap (not pictured) that the absolutely outstanding cabin manager Peter offered me a second serving. A delightful dish combined with a fresh danish and incredibly friendly and highly attentive service by Peter made for a terrific flight experience.

Hopefully you had another meal or two on your way to Bremen (BRE). ;)

(Brisbane = BNE) :)

Yeah, I’ve had some decent meals on VA recently but still nothing comes close to the satay sticks, beef curry or shepherds pie on VA1.
I find breakfast nowhere near as good on the reincarnation of VA either but hopefully things will pick up

29/11/21 | VA875 | MEL to SYD

First VA flight since March, which provided me with a great opportunity to try their new menu!

Began the flight with a sparkling wine PDB.

Dinner options on this 6pm flight were Spanish Chicken or the vegetarian Korean Bibimbap. Unfortunately we were in 2D and 2F (somewhat by choice and accepting the risk of sitting in those seats!) on what was a full flight and all six of the other passengers went with the chicken, so bibimbap was all they had left for us!

The dish was tasty although very much on the smaller side, the chicken looked better. Not sure if this is the norm on the MEL-SYD corridor but was disappointed to see no dessert included, just the cheese and crackers. Made the most of the full bar service and had a gin and tonic with the meal. Our FA was great and very attentive, being quick to clear trays away and offer additional drinks. After the gin I switched to a Green Beacon beer.

All in all an enjoyable flight and the dining has certainly come a long way since the snack boxes I had in 2020 and earlier in 2021. Comparing against recent QF J flights I think both have their pros and cons. Overall we are pretty well served by both airlines.

While the meal looks good, I reckon all airlines will be counting olives for a long time to come.

Agreed that both airlines offer a solid domestic business product with pro and cons for each but one charges a fraction of the other which tips the scales for me. Just can't justify paying for Qantas domestic business unless on rare occasions when they are heavily discounted.

SYD to CNS today the choices were chicken and rice or some kind of vegetarian pasta.

We both went with the chicken. It was decent enough, and to my pleasant surprise, it seemed to be breast meat.

Was definitely on the smaller side but we weren't too hungry after having something at the lounge :)

VA256 CBR-MEL at 8am this morning.

As usual for the first flights of the day out of Canberra, only one choice for breakfast - apple & cranberry granola with a dark chocolate muffin.

Wasn’t really a fan of the food. I realise VA doesn’t have a caterer in CBR so has to provide something with a long shelf-life when the plane was parked overnight in CBR but it was all a bit too sweet for my liking.

VA592 PER-HBA on 28th November

Southern chicken burger in brioche with carrot cake.

...

Mainland crackers and cheese were served as a starter before this was brought out.
Interesting, that seems to indicate that VA doesn't consider PER-HBA to be transcon service, and therefore doesn't get a "four course offer", just the standard longer flight "three course offer". Clever that the cabin leader acknowledged this by serving the cheese&crackers separately as an entree, but really, there should have been an additional cold plated entree IMO, plus the main plate, dessert & cheese&crackers.

VA273 MEL-CBR today, 14:45 departure

The choices were a hot chicken tandoori toastie or a tofu noodle salad.

Pretty much everyone chose the sandwich. It was really tasty and although a little on the small side, hit the spot on this short sector.

Great service and I was surprised to be offered the first choice of meals even though I was sitting in 2F. (Maybe due to status?)

My understanding is that Status does play a part as does things like last minute upgrades
Nope, status doesn't come into play when the orders are taken. It's pretty much 1A through to 2F.

For short flights like Canberra it should be cold options only but gate gourmet seem to like loading hot meals which complicates things for crew due to minimal flying time

While this is generally the case, a couple of years ago out of MEL, I was surprised to find those in 2DF having their orders taken before those in 1AC (me, WP) were taken next.

I had seen the 2D PAX come out of the Club exit on the way to boarding from the Southern Pier.

Huh? What's wrong with a hot option? I'd generally expect a hot option flying business, even on shorter routes.

That toastie looks good though size could be a problem if it were a longer route.

In that case I think I'm gonna start opting for row 1 instead of row 2. It's super annoying not getting a choice of meals, the difference in leg room is pretty negligible to me anyway.
