Australian state border restrictions

Australia and Malaysia (politically) have a lot in common, and it’s interesting to see the latter dropped their internal borders and intl exit controls this week. No doubt an indication of what is reasonable at this point of the pandemic.

It does serious concern me that people like the Queensland CHO push insane targets like 95% and go onto say the system will be overrun.

We seem to still be giving these politicians a massive pass on the apparent state of our healthcare system. We’re one of the richest countries in the world, pay one of the highest rates of tax in the world, pay a separate levy purely for healthcare and apparently our public health system cannot handle a virus that only 5-10% of the population aren’t vaccinated against? (and that ignores the disparity of care required for different age groups). It does amazingly look like each and every premier is going to avoid being held to account for this. Insane!

The problem with all of these emergency powers is that the power is devolving to someone qualified in a single discipline. If we have a road safety emergency, would the response be to reduce max speed to 15 kph. Or perhaps a couple of aviation accidents, where we could solve the problem by not allowing flight.

Whilst covid itself is/was a major problem, the downstream economic issues that it’s creating will probably be debilitating for the entire country. How is that rational?

The politicians will claim that they aren’t making the decisions, and so aren’t to blame, but what do we elect them for, if not to consider everything and to chart the best course of action. If anything, all of this has shown that our political system simply selects a bunch of plonkers.

And sheet home blame to the qualified.

Who are not qualified in anything..

Parliament is there for a reason. That is the place where the people's voices are supposed to be heard.
Recall Parliament and do a vote on lockdowns

They can open what they like, I'm still not going there for a holiday. Feel sorry for the tourism industry in Qld but I don't feel like it would be a welcoming place.

Please don’t hang us out to dry because of 3 or 4 of our ‘leaders’ with a collective IQ less than my shoe size. I can say with 100% certainty, any people involved with our tourism industry, directly, up or down stream are aghast at the way things have played out and will be over-welcoming to compensate!!

We will be open before Christmas, easily. The movement up here is really strong now to get rid of the state border restrictions.

Just listen to the language now being used in our press conferences…

Too little, too late I'm afraid.

A lot of people with family and personal connections want the border open, regardless of holidays.

As much as people from other states are now overlooking Queensland, the government's action has now led to most of QLD being petrified to leave their state, even to the NSW border bubble. That's going to be a problem even after the border opens.

It's already too late for the far north. If I was in a position to holiday in Far North Queensland with the tropical summer I'd be wanting to wait for the best part of six months from now to go there. I think tourism businesses up there are going to be hit especially hard even if Queensland is open for Christmas.

Understand, but seeing her smug face on billboards now welcoming everyone would just make me sick. Just can't get the 'Queensland holidays are for Queenslanders' out of my head.

I wonder when NSW will drop the 14 day isolation rules for people who have been in Victoria

My guess: NSW at at least 80% fully vaccinated, VIC at at least 70% fully vaccinated and some reciprocity in interstate travel restrictions.

If that's not reached before international travel starts then it could move to 7 days in line with the international quarantine time as an intermediate step.

I think Dom is asking for a reciprocal agreement - back to the days when the Premiers worked together to manage borders.

He wants it open as soon as possible.

However, I don't think it would be before NSW 80%. Bad look if Melbourne can travel to NSW regions before Sydney can.

I think Dan is actually wanting to move this along, so I'm optimistic that at VIC 80% it may be open in both directions for those vaccinated at least.

And the QLD Home Quarantine is not exactly going gangbusters.Only 407 people out of 1000 places.2000 were invited to apply and over 8000 border exemption request outstanding.

I have family in Queensland that I do want to see, but on principle I won't be going to Queensland any time soon. All of them can travel here when able, except possibly my 90 yr old father-in-law. I guess I will have to make an exception and go see him sometime, but it certainly won;t be soon after the shameful behaviour of the Queensland government.

100% agree with you. They want us now that it suits them, but denied people from ACT (back when it had no COVID for a very long time) to visit dying relatives. I for one will not forget the totally heartless, cruel and unnecessary treatment of fellow Australians, all the time whilst allowing footballers of every stripe and celebrities to come and go as they pleased. I will definitely be holding this grudge for a long time. I've been to Fiji before, and the people there really welcome tourists and the money they can bring to a community. I will also be trying Bali, Cook Islands, even Hawaii before I go to Queensland for leisure.

You can’t book anything from interstate into Qld with any certainty until you see how they react to the first outbreak post border reopening. (Whenever that it is).
Yep, and their track records suggests that OTT hysteria will be a defining characteristic of their reaction.
