The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Can’t wait to see that initiative then…

VIC have got mobile units going out, it’s not like it’s a novel idea so perhaps SA could just copy paste and please hurry up about it 😆🤪
It's much easier to simply close things down. Anyway the topic of the poor vaccination rates in what constitutes high risk border areas is at least getting traction now.

Nothing to replace it? Apart from our enormous network of path centres nationwide and shortly at home tests just approved by the TGA.
So where is this being communicated that this is the way forward. Change is a process you need to lead people through. And why have home tests taken so long to get approved, we should have had them last year? Why doesn’t everyone in NSW/VIC have a box of them already?
So why are they sick then? Unless directed to do so if you have no symptoms, immunised, then why be tested? Until we get the home kit then I'm not going to be poked up the nose again until I travel. Similar scenario with swine flu. Eventually even symptomatic people weren't tested just stayed home until better. I was a close contact of two people with swine flu and was never directed to be tested nor isolated.
the behaviours I have seen overseas are along the lines of “let’s all do a test before we go and visit grandma so we don’t bring her a breakthrough infection”

We know that asymptomatic spread is a thing so people try to protect those that are vulnerable even after DD vaccination.

We’re a few weeks away from opening up and seem to think that COVID normal is the same as pre-COVID normal.

Why would you need to advertise right now to get a test at a path lab, every Australian has been to one probably multiple times in their lives and directed there by doctors by in large once they communicate symptoms…

And probably because our vaccination rates will end up far higher than most countries including the US and UK which you refer to. Which means huge numbers will not even have symptoms.

I have heaps of relatives in the UK and the only time they test is if they are going on yet another European holiday as it’s required. Sigh, then they spam us with incredible photos of sunny Spain.

I have to say I’m concerned about the wind back of testing sites with nothing to replace it. The national plan still requires TTIQ, people need to be staying home when they are sick even if they are asymptomatic.

OK I'll bite - how exactly can you be sick if you are asymptomatic?

NSW is doing more than 100K daily tests. Pre outbreak they were doing sub 20K. Of course it's going to be wound back - that doesn't mean elimination altogether.

Australia just hit 80% first dose 16+ (80.5% to be exact)

NSW now at 89% first and 69.1% - so we'll see the big milestones of 90% first and 70% second this week before opening.
Glad there was a bit of catch-up on the long weekend numbers for NSW! It wasn't going to impact on opening up on the 11th Oct for 70% DD, but could have impacted on the additional lifting of restrictions for 80% DD. The projections don't show it, due to the long weekend data, but it's now back within reach for NSW by the 18th Oct

Editing to add - NSW needs another 57,938 second doses to reach 70% DD. The average second doses delivered in the last 5 business days in NSW was 85,119. We're hitting that one tomorrow.

I refer you to the rapid antigen testing site on NSWHealth.

To answer your question. Basically the tests need to be approved for accuracy and quality. That all takes time. There are several being produced. RATs not as good as PCR so in an evolving pandemic better to have the PCR. Once Vax rates are up RAT inaccuracy can be better tolerated which is why it is being rolled out in a targeted ways.

As to why everyone is not given a box of RAT - how long do you think the box will last if there is uncontrolled use?

uncontrolled us doesn’t seem to be a problem in the UK

ok, not sick but you can be vaxxed, inflected, asymptomatic and capable of transmitting. So if you are going to be around someone who is vulnerable, knowing you don’t have an infection would be good. People who have been vaccinated are still dying, especially those with pre-existing conditions and the elderly. ‘Let’s not kill grandma’ seems to be a good motivation for giving the whole family a lateral flow before going to visit her.

So much for the Yanks worrying about us.We have now passed the USA on first doses according to the world in data.

The site seems to suggest that the denominator is total population. If so there is some astonishing take up given that nowhere is vaccinating under 12s

Although perhaps that's a reflection on how poorly they are doing than how well we are doing, we are still well behind most of Europe/OECD members. It's not really new news that the US have a serious problem with getting vaccination levels up.

I don't think the data suggests that at all. We are ~10% percent off the pack for first dose when compared to those countries. Second dose we are further off (~25%) but the fact is you can see via the slider that we have made significant ground with our pace and we will fill that gap shortly if we maintain our current vaccination rates.

We're beating NZ and that's all that matters ;)

I'm finding it hard to regard this as a serious comment. Many of these countries hit our current level of fully vaccinated rates 2-3 months ago, you aren't a Liberal party apologist by chance?

Queensland mayor’s fury at low vaccine uptake

A Queensland mayor has given unvaccinated residents a brutal reality check, warning a lockdown may be the only option if more people don’t get the jab.

Mackay mayor Greg Williamson said officials were “past saying please” when asking people to get vaccinated.

“You have heard where we are. We are still 11 per centage points behind the state average for vaccinations, which is already the lowest in Australia” he said.

“We don’t need to be beating around the bush anymore. We are so far behind in terms of our vaccinations.”
