Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I wonder how much appetite there is for continued lock downs in Victoria. If they keep being necessary, then one take is that they don’t work. Whilst there’s talk of governments keeping control of the virus, I wonder if the real risk is that of losing control of the population.

Folks, regardless of who is doing what right now, NSW is doing it tough. Let's not add to their struggles with talk of 'shoulda coulda woulda'.

I know.

Having been in Victoria for all of our long lockdown last year, and most of the others, this kind of talk doesn't help. In fact it hinders.

Dear Sydney, you have been handed a cough sandwich. I can't take it away, but rest assured I know what it tastes like. Regards, Jess. ❤️

I was not aware of this and may have been mentioned before but almost half the current covid cases in NSW are aged under 30. May be why NSW is so keen to get the younger age groups vaccinated as soon as possible.

The median age is 38 and a sizable percentage of people older than that have been vaccinated, so there's nothing particularly surprising there.

And adults in the 20 -39 band have dominated cases throughout the pandemic in Australia.

This is a graph of all cases since the pandemic began in Australia.

There are more of them.

Younger people tend to interact with more people more often and so available more for transmission opportunities with the virus. They tend to be:
  • more active socially in frequency and in gathering size
  • work more in roles that interface with strangers more (ie retail, barstaff, wait staff)
  • work more in teams

I get the sense watching from afar, but talking to relatives, that 1 week seems OK but longer than that tests peoples resolve. Also that school kids at home are a big problem. But it is questionable whether 6.0 will be tolerated. . But the media probably doesn't help. They seek out whingers which only re-inforces the ultra-negativity. I mean the other night on the news it was whining that businesses wouldn't have enough notice for opening up. People I spoke to were saying, fine, give them an extra days notice by keeping the lockdown on for a day longer so businesses could have their 48 hrs notice of opening up ....

ABC just did a presentation of "we are one, but we are many....we are Australian". In pre Covid times it would have made me smile. Now, it's a travesty of what Australia actually is. I don't know how we can fix it.

Desperately not trying to be political, but the obvious solution is a Federal Government who steps up and says this is an Australian problem and we will take responsibility, for better and for worse.

I'd be amazed if her employment contract didn't mention improper conduct/bringing brand in to disrepute as grounds for dismissal. Everything she's done would fit nicely in to that.
Well, the names are out.

More Exposure Sites have been added in Victoria. Still all Tier 2 sites.

But as two are in Altona North and Yarraville and off to the west, whereas the others are all in Frankston (south-east), it may mean that a second case has been found.

Just need to remember that if the Delta variant is not contained in Sydney, it will inevitably spread to every corner of Australia. Period.
This is what I'm finding interesting about the current situation. Gladys is essentially deciding Australia's entire approach to COVID, not just NSW's.

Luck has a big part to play. How many delta outbreaks has QLD had over the last 6 weeks or so.Fortunately not one of the 30% that are more likely to pass the infection on to many people.I fear what may happen if there is ever a super spreader in QLD.
With NSW at least 3 super spreader events - limo man, Hoxton Park party and recent funeral with 45 of 50 people becoming positive.

Something doesn’t add up. No-news says two new sights that “the” mystery case visited but you’ve got a Supermarket in Frankston for an hour late Saturday morning, IGA in Frankston Saturday afternoon then a supermarket in Altona an hour later. Then Yarraville early Sunday morning. Shopping and staying overnight with family in the west?

Exposure sites now stand at 7, plus the Testing Site (his workplace) on two days.

As I mentioned, it could a possible second case based on the times and the geography.

First case was at say found o be positive at say 10 or 11-ish AM. He was being interviewed while the presser was on.

They do use the rapid test for close contacts where they are known to have had close proximity to the index/new case, as well as the slower PCR to confirm as it is more accurate, in order to speed up find positive in close contacts such as workmates or household contacts.

That initial screening with the rapid test may have discovered for example a positive co-worker, who say lives in Altona North and who stopped off at the Yarraville 7-Eleven on the way to work..

Remember that the first case found today, may not be the first case in whatever this cluster ends up being. The case announced this morning was symptomatic. He may have positive asymptomatic contacts that infected him, or vice versa.

Very interesting & I agree something doesn't add up with the time lines.
As you suggest may well be a 2nd case
But authorities have failed to tell us this a this stage.

Doing well to get from Altona to/from Frankston under an hour.

Contact tracers, get your Red Bull's & No-Doz's & get to the bottom of this. Please.

Yes. This is the end result. As everybody knows (but admittedly many refuse to accept), this virus will spread to every corner of the world, including the hermit nation of Australia.

The most likely source? The city that had continuously accepted virtually all international arrivals.

Might as well call next years Flu the “Sydney strain” as well, because it’ll arrive via Mascot. Joys of being Australia’s world city - but when has it ever mattered before?

Well it is early days yet and they will still be gathering information. It is between the press conferences, and they mainly tend to talk talk about new cases in detail at the daily press conference.

And yes the contact tracers will be working overnight on it.

The important thing is that they update the exposure sites list swiftly (the last update was at 8.47PM which is only say 9 or 10 hours after Case 1 was known ), and more importantly they would have already been contacting any known people from those sites at those times.

By now a sizeable number of people will already have been tested, or know that they need to get tested and isolate till a negative test result is obtained.

I'm afraid I find it hard to be as generous as you JT :(

It's not too late to at least listen to the 'shoulda coulda woulda'... but both the government and population seem to be steadfastly digging in to ignore the precedent in other states.

The NSW model isn't working. If you keep creating your own problem, how long is the sympathy extended?

I’ve noticed Lynda has been absent from this thread. I genuinely hope she/ they’re going ok.

Well, maybe it is time for Gladys to say international arrivals into Sydney is for NSW residents only?
After all, Queensland hospitals are for Queenslanders only; No we are not giving any of our Pfizer to NSW etc etc
I think you get my drift..... I am, you are, We are Austrailians!! 🙄
