New Zealand Travel Bubble Announcement

NZ have recently changed their advice for people wanting to travel out of MEL to NZ. There are a number of categories, but the one I fit states that travel is approved if you have come *from* NZ after April 6. I got back from my NZ trip last week, so I am allowed to return from MEL. Otherwise I would have had to travel via ABX again.

Just announced on SBS news the bubble with NSW is paused for 72 hours from 10pm tonight
Yep, had some friends due to go tomorrow. Should have gone last few days. Today’s NSW news not good, glad I escaped to Tassie last weekend.

Meh. QLD and WA haven't flinched. I wouldn't be so worried.

I’m not worried, I got out. But after a few hopeful days I think you’d be fooling yourself not to regard today as a bit of a setback.
There's community transmission in all three Eastern states. I think we're starting to come to terms with the new normal - and it ain't zero cases.

My upcoming trip to NZ tomorrow is now being rebooked because the bubble is suspended. Should the fact that I am fully vaccinated not count for anything in these travel bubble suspensions?

No... you still have the ability to contract and spread the virus. Right now I'd say think of the vaccination as a personal benefit (you likely won't get very sick).

Until both AU and NZ increases vaccination rates expect nothing to change.

I reckon NZ were given a heads up of the Wellington flight earlier today and that's why they paused the bubble.

Maybe, maybe not.

There seems currently to be an absence of media/social media of anyone on the flights on their having been advised to isolate for 14 days. That tends to come out once people are advised that they had a positive person on their flight, and so that would suggest it was late breaking.

It will be interesting to see when he got tested and when his result was known. He flew back at 11.33am on 21 June.

Why were they tested? Were they instructed to get a test, or did they just seek it (ie symptomatic)? Was he tested on arrival? Did they present for testing the next day? Did he have a test before leaving NZ?

There is a distinct lack of other exposure sites apart from the two flights suggestive that their interview may not been earlier today, or that was not very complete at the time of the latest NSW Exposure site update., and so this test result may not be that old. Even if they went straight home and isolated they would have been through the airport and that has not yet been list as an exposure site.

They may have driven themselves home, or they may have taken an Uber or train etc. More should be known by the NSW Media Conference tomorrow.

The NZ Gov announcing the pause stated:

Quarantine-Free Travel from New South Wales to New Zealand will be paused for 72 hours from 11.59pm tonight (New Zealand time). As with previous pauses, it will be under constant review.
Ten new community cases of COVID-19 were announced in NSW today, taking the total amount of cases linked to the cluster to 21.
This decision follows a public health assessment today, which determined that while the overall risk to public health in New Zealand currently remains low, there are still several unknowns, including a case that was infectious while in the Sydney community and a primary school age child with no clear link established at present.
Anyone who has only been in Norfolk Island, and not been in NSW, is still eligible for Quarantine-Free Travel.
New Zealand health officials are also updating their advice for anyone already in New Zealand who has recently visited Sydney’s Westfield Bondi Junction mall.
In line with NSW Health’s advice: anyone in New Zealand who was at Westfield Bondi Junction (including the car park) at any time between 12 and 18 June should contact Healthline on 0800 358 5453, get tested and stay at home until they get a negative test result, or remain isolated if instructed.
NSW public health officials are continuing to add new locations of interest. Anyone who has been in Sydney since 11 June should check the NSW Health website: https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/latest-news-and-updates
Anyone at these locations of interest at the specified times should call Healthline on 0800 358 5453, get tested and self-isolate until they return a negative result.
Anyone who was at a location of interest at the specified times also cannot travel to New Zealand within 14 days of the exposure event.
This is also a reminder that anyone with symptoms, not just recent travellers, should get tested for COVID-19.
New Zealand public health officials are regularly reviewing developments in the NSW and advice will be updated, if and when required.

Norfolk Island? Have they confused it with Lord Howe Island? Norfolk is not part of NSW, it’s its own territory. That was a weird statement from them.

The NZ contact tracing was announced within a couple of hours of the NZ announcement. It’s pretty common for state health officials (inc NZ) to discuss cases before they go public.

Well I certainly know very little about Norfolk Island, but they did write it as if it was its own territory: Anyone who has only been in Norfolk Island, and not been in NSW,

So I assume they know it is not part of NSW. You would not write for example Anyone who has only been in Dubbo, and not been in NSW,

From a quick search as Norfolk has direct flights with both NSW and NZ they may wish to just exclude at present people who have been in NSW from entering NZ.

From a quick search it would seem to fly to Lord Howe Island that you have to go via SYD (ie NSW). But I could easily be wrong on this

Why didn’t they exclude Queensland? It has direct flights to both NSW and NZ. Same goes for USA, Singapore, UAE…. It’s a random comment that makes no sense.

Is the travel bubble between NZ and Qld still intact? If so, they quarantine free travel Qld-NZ still applies. They just recently re-instated Vic.
