Had lunch at my brother's today, and actually remembered to take photos of all the wines but 1 😂

Pinot was definitely my favourite

Today I visit Mittagong with my kids, just for relaxing. Btw visit one winery which very close to the bushwalking track. I just found that is Artemis. I don’t know it just so close to Sydney. I call them at 3:30, they said the tasting is closed. I drove there to visit even I can’t taste any wine. There is a sign in front of the road “cellardoor closed” Google maps said close at 4pm. Lucky there are still about 10 tables of guess drinking. They are nice and allow me to taste. $5 to taste any 6 wines. I choose 3 of the Pinot, semi dry Riesling, sb, cab blend. The basic point is pale, the middle range is good but not worth 50. I like the grand crux, but 120 is expensive to me. I would say it’s value 80-90.

Pic 2 is Grand Crux

On Friday Pinot wine gethering, I think my HH reserve is the best, mt pass it’s peak. Kooyong doesn’t have typical Pinot favour, it’s not my type. Shadow fax is light on palate, good on nose. I can see it’s future after aging. Good potential. Merlot is still young and good. The guy do wholesale of couples of penfolds wines, including cellar reserve series. So the price is pretty low I forgot how much.

shadowfax estate 2019, mt difficulty 2011, Kooyong 2013, Home Hill 2015, cellar reserve merlot 2010

Theme last night was Cabernet Franc. By chance there were two bottles of the Brash Higgins 2017, both in the same bracket, both under screw cap. One purchased on release from the winery and stored in ideal conditions. The other purchased yesterday and who knows how stored. Ironically, it was this one that showed better! WOTN was the 2015 Brash Higgins.

Funny, that my brother & I drank 2 bottles from the same 6pk of Grenache we bought just weeks apart and tasted totally different 😬

different barrel, even wine in the top layer will be different from the bottom layer of the barrel.
I'm not sure about this (definitely could be right) but I think the context in which the wine is drunk may be the biggest variable in this instance (e.g. wine glass type, food accompanying, mood, health factors etc... etc...).

True, mood, wine glass, etc do more affect the tasting. As the poster mentioned drunk at the same time, I assume they use the same wine glass, and other factors are the same.

It was interesting. It also probably says something about blind tasting.

We taste blind and the type of glassware is identical.

We tasted them in three brackets, from L-R: the four 2017/18s, the next three 2015s, then the last two 2012s.

They were all 100% cab franc, except for the Frankland Estate Olmo's Reward, which is a cab franc, merlot, malbec blend. Component percentages were not specified on the label, but it was noted that it's usually about 60% cab franc.

I agree, but both my brother & I agreed!

The 1st bottle you could taste alot of alcohol, the 2nd was much improved.

So I recently purchased the Monterra Elevage Barossa Shiraz 2018. $60 down to $30 from TWC.

Nothing on Vivino (there is now), but plenty kicking around online with reviews.

when I first posted the deal there was some dubious and uncertain comments about the wine and the value. Hopefully below can assist. Let me just say as a precursor - dont pay full price for this wine, but the $30 price point is fair.

The color is vibrant purple, the nose is slightly restrained but has underlying notes of both blueberry, blackberry as well as wonderful cacao. The palate is silky, but surprisingly a little more medium-full bodied than you’d expect from Barossa. Subtle spice, nice oak and a decent tannin structure that coats the mouth. Acidity levels are manageable and will no doubt will mellow well with age.
