Jacqui Lambie banned from Qantas Group flights for six months for abusing staff

I'm sure if it was released (leaked or otherwise) she'd have a fair bit to say and it would involve something to do with mental health / PTSD etc.

To be elected to the Senate requires a candidate to obtain nowhere near half the votes within an electorate (as in the House of Representatives). Many senators are elected with a handful of first preferences and a flow of preference votes from others who are eliminated as the count progresses. Sadly, it is possible that Senator Lambie's distasteful outburst could gain her publicity and sympathy, and support from a small minority in the community, sufficient to see her re-elected easily at the next election, notwithstanding the offence she has caused and the apology that she has made.

Question that no one has asked:
Why was JL not allowed into the CL before she was banned?

how can she get from CBR to SYD without flying QF
Drive up the highway like most people.

JL network party got 62% of the quota required for a senate seat without resorting to preferences and 9% of the Tasmanian senate vote.
After preferences JL occupies 1 of 6 Tasmanian Senate seats.

That Tasmania has 6 senate seats - the same as each of the mainland states except for NT (2) and ACT (2) is another story with associated Pros and Cons. Here we have a "Con"

Tasmania in fact has 12 senate seats, the same as each of the other five states, with two senate seats in each of the Territories. Normally half the Senate seats in each state are up for election, although in the case of a Double Dissolution election, all 12 senate seats in each state are to be elected. In either case, only a very small proportion of the statewide vote is required to elect a senator - typically about 7.7% in a double dissolution, or 14% in a normal half Senate election - will be sufficient to gain a quota and get someone elected. A flow of preferences from other minor party candidates will usually help to achieve the quota.

The objective in the Senate voting system was to take power away from the larger states and protect the interests of the smaller states, but another consequence was that it allows people with narrow support bases to be elected. Senator Lambie's recent outburst may bring her even more voter support, rather than it being career-threatening.

The United States senate is similarly set up, with two Senators from each State, representing, say, California with 39 million people, or Wyoming with 578,000 people. Senators are usually Republicans or Democrats, but there is often a predominance of small-state Republicans.

I’d hazard a guess that she wasn’t flying QF from MEL.
QF stopped CL anytime access a couple of years ago.
I’m surprised they didn’t ban her for life given the abuse to staff and the homophobic slur.

I suspect if she was a 'normal' everyday person it would have been much much longer....
To take a dissenting view to most in this thread (and not excusing JL's alleged behaviour in anyway).

I do have a problem with a private company, with extensive market power, deciding to take away the most feasible means for a duly elected senator in Australia's parliament, to travel between their state/home and federal parliament.

I think the government may need to organise private jet flights for JL during this period, to ensure some of the more outlandish route suggestions in this thread, don't impact the senator's ability to serve our country (irrespective of whether her political views are the same as mine).

Not ‘alleged’; she’s admitted it, and apologised for it.

Fair enough, but if I had such reservations, it wouldn’t be limited to politicians. Same for everyone, surely.

But QF isn't taking her most feasible means of travel to CBR.
She lives in Burnie and has her parliamentary office in Burnie. Her nearest airport is BWT which until the recent announcement was only serviced by ZL and Sharp airlines.Even now the ZL service to MEL is still more frequent than QF.
ZL also flies MEL-CBR.So to me that is her most feasible means to travel to CBR.Of course it means no Chairman's Lounge.QF has a definite right to refuse service to the CL politician or not.

The key to my thinking is, when she is travelling as a senator, she is not an individual, she is the voice of thousands of Tasmanians.

Not the voice of thousands of Tasmanians when those vile words came out of her mouth, thats for sure.

Anyway she has admitted guilt, more than accepted her punishment - said it was 'more than appropriate for my behaviour' on the radio.

She well knows if that video footage ever made it to the media it would be big trouble, so really she has gotten off incredibly lightly.

It is disputed that those comments were made.

For their part, Qantas - after two days of silence - issued a statement saying it doesn’t typically comment on individual customer matters.

“(However) the allegation of hate speech being used in our lounges requires a response. We have confirmed with our lounge staff that Senator Lambie did not make a homophobic remark as part of the incident for which she has apologised.”
