Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Well if nothing else the post count on this thread has increased dramatically.

I keep checking back as usually this much activity indicates another Art Series/Pommery/Duval Leroy type deal....oh well
I'll post a little less 🤞

I believe I have seen Duval pop up on BWS clearance, not yet discounted and only a single store. I'll keep you updated if anything changes, but perhaps something to keep an eye out for.

Different duval 🤭
This was a FWC pricing error that saw their Femme de Champagne go for $50/42.50 a pop. T'was magnificent.

I basically meant, unless a deal like the Art Series comes along I won't be buying anymore! Just super strict to my budget now.
so it was cheap and heavily discounted, but do you like it, is there any benefit to you buying it - if not, then there's no value, it's not a bargain for you

there are some champagnes that i won't buy no matter how cheap they are, because i know that my money can be better spent on others that i enjoy more, even though those might be less discounted or more expensive

The whole testing, I mean you can't beat experience. If I even drank a bottle a week, that's 50 bottles a year. It def adds up over the years, that's why I do tend to rely on the suggestions of experienced drinkers.
experience is gained through drinking/tasting, and suggestions by others are better when both you and they know what you like/want

(free) tastings are good, however it can be better to drink a bottle over two or three days

what do you mean by if you drank a bottle a week? if it's only one, then why buy so much wine just because it's cheap?

let's say you, including with family and friends, can drink six bottles in a month

if you don't want to try different varieties each month, but instead focus on one, such as pinot noir, then each month for your six-pack, buy/drink three wines each from two different areas - for example, Yarra Valley & Burgundy, Mornington Peninsula & Central Otago, Tasmania & Adelaide Hills

if the only wines you buy each month are for these six packs, to explore and discover what you prefer, then you should hopefully have saved more money than otherwise, to be better spent later after you've done this research

Under Cost Iconic Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz Blend From Australia's Oldest Family Owned Winery Established 1849

One Of The Greatest Cleanskin Deals Ever Offered 5 Red Star Rated Winery James Halliday Wine Companion

A classic Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The colour is dense red and the aromas are seamless with ripe floral aromatics, red currants, cedar and plum. Rich and dense palate with more exotic floral notes, plum, cranberry and a serious t

I've now tried this wine and I will be requesting a return when I work out how the returns process works. The cork has a kangaroo on it and is marked "wine of australia". Without taking it out of the bottle it seems to be a 46mm cork. The wine is perfectly good at the price it is sold at but I would be very disappointed if this is what the Signature tastes like. I found it rather upfront, with a hole in the middle of the palate and a somewhat dilute finish driven by acid. It does have a very attractive nose.

Sorry to hear
A few things I found didn't pass the sniff test - the seller's constant spamming once you do sign up, the timer on the website intended to induce an impulse buy, a newly created account who waxed lyrical about the wine when some of the details didn't quite add up (no accusations here - just found it a bit dubious)

Looks like its still available for purchase - despite this being a limited time deal

Sorry to be a devil’s advocate here but perhaps there is a chance you wouldn’t like the original Signature? If I read correctly you haven’t had it before?
It has been a while since I had it - what you described, I vaguely recollect is what the Signature tastes like, it is rather upfront but I can’t recollect the hole in the middle. It was well structured across the entire spectrum and had a good acid balance to counter the tannins from memory. I guess I will await and taste mine and will return it as well if no good.

Thanks for the notes and I will try mine as soon as I get it. I would have put it away otherwise.

Edit: Just had a quick look at Vivino reviews of Signature. They seem somewhat consistent with your experience.. upfront, good nose, delicate finish, good acidity

To be fair, if something is deeply discounted you could probably derive at least some value by gaining a new tasting experience without having much financial impact.

I'll confess to buying a lot of wines (largely influenced by none other than you), which I don't know if I'll enjoy, but was worth purchasing to expand our wine knowledge.

I think it's a hard balance to strike trying to gain more experience/knowledge while limiting spending (given you don't know what you don't know - so you really need to taste to rectify that).

I think the tip around mix packs or simply not buying scores of the same wine is probably a key takeaway. I personally loathe purchases of 6 packs, given I don't have enough knowledge to comfortably know what we want to cellar.

What you have described is the usual GWD secret cellar MO.

As for what you're implying about my account, you can f off. Some people are genuine in this world.

Thanks for the view - useful to know.
Can’t help but think that in the context of recent posts (including some directly above mine) that people have different tastes and buy to what you like - that we are still no closer to knowing if this is the Signtaure, noting you’ve never otherwise tasted it (and possibly still haven’t!!).
All the same, great that you shared your tasting notes as this will be helpful for many I’m sure

I would be very keen to hear your thoughts. I am not keen on drinking labels and yes, there is a chance that I might not like the Signature. I do not recall ever having it. In addition I have come to accept that I am somewhat bad at working out which ones will improve with time in the cellar, and which ones will not, in this case in my opinion provenance and track record are key. Maybe I would take a punt on it if it was labelled Signature, but without any sort of guarantee I am not taking chances.

that people have different tastes and buy to what you like

Yes, my views are my own opinion and I will openly say that I wish I knew a lot more about wine. However, I do have skin in the game and my criterion is simple: are the rest of the five bottles likely to give me pleasure down the road? If I don't look forward to drinking them, back they go.

I tried one of the "Signatures" and thought it was good, particularly for the price. Not as big as I expected but it had good fruit. I expected it to be a touch early fro my liking and it was. The tannins will give it a bit of staying power. I think it is the genuine article but they have made sure there aren't any giveaways with the cork etc.

I'll put the other 5 bottles down for a few years and start pulling one out every couple of years.

Timing of your account and the very focused posts are rather coincidental though.

Not that I have any skin in the game around the GWD deal.

Ive been around a year. I thought I'd reply to someone else's post that mentioned the deal. I was offered the deal a night or 2 earlier, had done the research (called GWD, searched all the possibilities) and satisfied with the conclusion that I thought it was The Signature. I actually ordered second pack after tasting and comparing notes with that on the wine companion.

If someone else on here posts they dont like it, it doesnt mean it isnt The Signature. Jeepers.

It's an inflated $60 bottle of wine, not $100. Not sure it should be expected to be royalty.

Having now read the same notes I can definitely see similarities between the nose and finish between my bottle and the one described:
