Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

So Premier Marshall in SA has just said that the reopening of the state border on the 20th of July is now "under a cloud". He also said that they "will look very closely at [Victoria] and update the people of South Australia as soon as we possible can."
I can see my mums trip from Adl to Brisbane in early August disappearing as we speak. Is SA Premier has said this then AP won't hesitate to extend Qld when she makes announcement tomorrow.

I don't get it. Why wouldn't WA, SA, QLD , TAS & NT just all agree to open mutual borders and put 14 days quarantine on arrivals from Victorians.

Can't any of them think out of the box than "all or nothing"?

Just the hot spot suburbs should be considered for isolation/quarantine.

They (state gov's) aren't built for this level of thinking, I'm sorry to say - they have fallen into this level of power by a convergence of unprecedented events.

Would require all the stares to cooperate - when has that happened?

They aren't capable of thinking bigger picture than their states and to be fair - they aren't structured to operate that way.

That is what the federation is for.

But unfortunately in this specific and unique circumstance, the states have come into a little too much power....

SA is actually open to those states but sadly those states haven't reciprocated. Currently only NSW and Vics require 14 days iso.

The whole economy is in free fall and about to get a whole lot worse in September over Premiers getting a metaphorical high on fear factor over a fully expected and anticipated, and planned for, and resourced for, outbreak in a few suburbs in one state. I hope voters remember at the next election. Meanwhile, 100,000s families are queuing up at foodbank for their next meal.

BTW: If you can afford even just a few dollars, every bit helps.....fully tax deductable and tomorrow is EOFY

In reality the only people who need to remember anything are those in Victoria. While I agree that mental health/ unemployment will be the next pandemic, at least in every state other than Victoria, people can see that their efforts have had some impact. Victorians are still feeling the same financial pain but are looking at a government that has also made significant health errors.

IIRC Elimination was never the goal and agreed by all states and the feds from the very start. SA has had its issues of its own (BTW My birthplace and 70% of my life was in SA).

IIRC, 10 infected Americans allowed to roam free, without supervision, cause an outbreak in the Barossa, allowed to hire a car and drive to NSW.

No fighting - we have enough problems :). It’s been a learning curve and a lot of mistakes were made early on (including Ruby Princess fiasco.)

I guess we are all disappointed at what has happened in Melbourne as it all seemed to be tracking so well with everything opening up and domestic travel looking feasible. This is a set back for everyone especially restaurants in Victoria :( While there was the expectation of hotspots this seems to have escalated more than perhaps it should - hopefully in future there will be more checking of people asked to quarantine as a % just can’t be trusted.

As I mentioned earlier, the testing criteria has changed so there’s limited value in comparing Mar-Apr figures with today.

If we went door to door in Sydney and Brisbane doing tests, we’d be showing plenty of positives as well.

Agreed There have been inexcusable slip-ups in VicHealth and they need a slap on the wrist, lift their game, and take the necessary urgent actions to rectify (hopefully that is already occurring - we won't know if successful fo 14 days and we should expect in the normal course of events the news will be worse before it gets better)

But regardless of the current outbreak and stuff-ups, the current level of border restrictions by other states between themselves are totally indefensible on the facts on the table (based on their own agreements and goals) and blaming Vic and people venting fury at Vic over their own premiers inaction; not taking the most responsible actions to help restore some normality to the economy helps no-one.

Yes, and Barossa was locked down and within a short period of weeks was under control.

You have the facts about the group incorrect though. And remember this was back in late March/early April when Covid was a very new thing to grapple with. Three months later and we should be better at this.

It was a US couple concerned (the rest stayed in quarantine as required), they escaped isolation as they weren't put 'under guard'. They were not 'allowed' to hire a car but they did, and had they stayed in SA they would have been required to be questioned by police.

SA has always tested travellers from OS once the compulsory quarantine came into effect and with 100% compliance. Security sure did not mingle with the travellers. Even as recently as the weekend the Deputy Health Chief was mumbling words that said there was no need to insist on compulsory testing for all overseas travellers. I mean really?

I feel very sorry for all the Victorians who have been doing the right thing, and I know that many people that we work with are at their wits end thinking all the hard yakka that they have done is being thrown away by a few idiotic people who don't give a stuff. And I can't help but think the Govt has contributed to some of that mind set.

It won't take much for the virus to get into communities now that just don't need it. So we need to work out what that plan is now because somehow we have to restart the economy.

Those of us in Melbourne are also disappointed that a handful of idiots have caused these outbreaks. Most of us have been doing the right thing and were keen to get on with life.

Lets also be very clear, yes there have been some idiots, but equally this virus is unstoppable because the levels of asymptomatic infection are so so high and the effect on younger, fitter, non vulnerable people is so overwhelmingly mild.

Many of the 'spreaders' have been completely oblivious. Which is why slowly people will come to realise it has spread alot further than we think.

The Rydges quarantine hotel in Melbourne has bedbugs. There is a call for it to be closed and the people to be moved. I suppose they take the bed bugs with them.

People accept that - what they don’t accept is people working after they have tested positive (which happened recently in Melbourne).

And 3 positives in SA today from the people who arrived from India over the weekend. They are always tested Within a day of arrival here.

That seems quite a few less than some might have forecast. Will be interesting to see if any more by day 11 or whenever SA do the "exit" test (Vic should be doing this as well). Some of the stories out of India seem dire, but then again media "bad news sells" hype maybe.
