I know that there is a whole bunch of QF flights out of LAX to Oz each night but does anyone know what time the checkin counters open for the earliest flight?

The first QF departure from LAX is at 2230 with 3-5 departures over the next 90 mins.
The QF website claims that LAX check in opens at 6pm. Last time I was there, it opened closer to 6.30.

and the line was way back down the escalator with no TSA pre. Normally takes about 30-45 minutes to get through on a good night

Given that there are a number of other checkpoints able to get you into TBIT, there is really no reason to have to go through the main TBIT TSA checkpoint above the check in area.

Thanks everyone! BTW my gold status came through quicker than I was expecting - I must have mis-mathed it somewhere.

I'm a twice a year traveller through LAX and wasn't aware of other checkin points. Can you enlighten me as to where they are and are they easier/quicker than the main terminal or do you mean that I still need to use the main checkin area but enter in a different place

Transit security downstairs at the TBIT arrivals level is the easiest ...

After check-in, go outside and down a level to arrivals and go back inside ... turn left and head to the end of the corridor.

The only location to check in and drop bags are at that airlines check in desks, ie, in the TBIT departures check in for QF.
There are however, 7 TSA checkpoints at LAX which can be used to access the airside of TBIT. The closest to the QF check in desks are the main TBIT checkpoint above the check in area, and a smaller checkpoint downstairs on the arrivals level.
Other then during the morning arrivals peak, the arrivals level checkpoint is rarely busy. Going through this checkpoint leads you to a escalator which takes you up to level 5 and into a corridor midway between TBIT and T4.
Following this corridor into TBIT lets you see the main TBIT checkpoint through windows and takes you right to the QF F lounge.
Since the TBIT-T4 connector opened, I have never waited more then 5 minutes to clear TSA in TBIT (I've even used this checkpoint a number of times after checkin with AA in T4), where as I'd always had to wait 30+ mins to get through the main TBIT checkpoint.

Checked in at QF in TBIT about 7.30pm Friday night and upstairs didn't look too busy so headed up there and got through in about 15 minutes. Biggest cause of holdups up there seems to be no one clearing the empty trays off the far end of the x-ray machine conveyors meaning that the x-ray operator can't keep processing through the machine.

Thats all great info you have provided. So in your opinion is the early evening at the TBIT a busy or quiet time for the terminal

Flew out of LAX to SYD on QF12 on Tuesday 23 July. Qantas check in counters opened at 6pm. Plenty of people started lining up around 5:30pm.
