As a retiree I usually only do one overseas trip a year and was surprised when booking a trip to Europe with Qantas recently to find the checked luggage allowance for Silver FF has been reduced to the same level as Bronze members. When did this change occur and why wasn't it publicized? Apart from the points I have accumulated I wonder what benefit I actually get from my silver membership.

As far as I am aware Silver status never got additional luggage allowance although Qantas Club does but only on QF metal, I've always understood checked luggage allowance has solely been dependent on booked travel class.

In the early 2000s to Europe you only got a 20kg checked luggage, this switched to 23kgs when the airlines standardised to US 50 pounds per bag. On routes to/from USA you get 2*23kgs, everywhere else it is seems to start at 1*23kgs (except on LLcs where it is still often only 20kgs).

If you need more luggage you could consider booking BA via Qantas as they allow 23Kgs carry on where as Qantas only allows 7kgs.

Says on the QF website that Silver Frequent flyers get 42kg in economy on international flights excluding North and South America. Not sure where it's telling you otherwise, but considering it says this in plain text on their website, I'd chalk up wherever you're seeing otherwise as one of QF's many IT errors. :)

Extra baggage is a tier benefit of Silver:

Extra checked baggage allowance
For the times you need to pack a bit more. Available on most Qantas flights when travelling in Economy or Premium Economy

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Great clarification above for QF metal.

I do notice however that Qantas status benefits do not always apply when booked on a code share - who is the OP actually flying with (operating airline)? If on Qantas metal you will get the status/QC benefits but if on other one world or partner airlines not necessarily.

I have an upcoming itinerary with a BA flight; and my luggage is limited by the allowance on this flight as on all the QF flights the allowance exceed my needs by at least 1 suitcase.

I wonder if OP has booked a partner/oneworld flight through the QF website.

Extra baggage allowance isn't a oneworld Ruby benefit - it's a QFF specific benefit for Silvers on QF flights.

And quite possible the OP is on an Emirates operated flight with QF flight number, given the Europe destination. So no OneWorld benefits even if they existed. Note from the previously linked QF baggage information:
Some Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club members are entitled to an additional non ticketed checked baggage allowance. This allowance applies to travel on:
  • Qantas and QantasLink operated flights with a QF flight number (excluding services to and from Lord Howe Island and QF codeshare services).
  • Emirates operated flights between and within Europe, The Middle East, North Africa, Asia, New Zealand and Australia when booked with either a QF or EK flight number on your ticket.
So QF Silver FF benefits should apply to Emirates operated flights between Australia and Europe with either QF or EK flight number.

Thank you all for your comments
I am flying Emirates code share Adelaide, Dubai, Paris and then Brussels, Dubai, Adelaide. For reasons I can't explain I could not find any comment on the extra allowance for Silver FF when I booked although I had previously utilised the 42kg allowance and was looking to do so again this year. Whether I was missing the blindingly obvious or whether there was a glitch with the web site at that time I don't know but I too have now found the detail allowing up to 42kg for my planned flight.
I do find the Qantas websites hard to follow at times and they appear to change randomly without rhyme or reason.
