Grammar Discussions

Today's peeves:

Does the writer mean ‘disinterested’ or ‘uninterested’? "... it might seem problematic to stage a musical as utterly disinterested in the inner lives of .... as Jersey Boys".

…. hosting a subscriber event ....... where myself, Stephen Bartholomeusz, and business section editor Mathew Dunckley…" (will be in attendance).

sheesh.
'Myself' is appearing quite often. Such as 'Please contact myself if ...'

From the fully woke Independent no less.

"She made history when threw herself in front of the King's horse at Epsom Derby to protest against women's suffrage.

Emily Davison died from her injuries four days after the horse crashed into her on 4 June 1913, in front of stunned crowds."

On International Women's Day we remember the death that changed everything

Criticising that is like shooting fish in a barrel. An interesting mental image of her deathbed though.

Not so much grammar, but showing up the vagaries of the English language.
While in Sri Lanka we saw misspellings - some accidental but I think some deliberate as well, such as:
  • Car sticker - Keep Clam and Drive Safely
  • Road side billboard for bridal shop - For the most stylish Bridle Wear
  • Restaurant - Swiss cuisine including Cheese Foundous

From news.com.au google news feed:

"There has been plenty of noise surrounding the AFL scraping runners, but the league bite back by stating they are unlikely to revert back now."
How many errors can they fit in one sentence?

There’s a chook egg recall on. Presumedly, these supermarket egg boxes come in either six or one dozen sizes. So why are there headlines describing the eggs as , “these ones ....”. That is so irritating.
‘These’ would be perfect.

I have a bug bear with past or present tense while being served by telephonists and retail assistants.

“And what was your surname?”, .....ah, it still IS smith...

“And what card DID you want to pay with?”...aaah, I’d still like to use my Amex.

And on it goes... everywhere, and it drives me mad. Oh, it drove me mad.

I notice that “self” in some form or other is added into everyday language. “My wife and myself will be going” .
“Will yourself be attending”?
The latest (courtesy of AFF) is “we did it to self-justify.....”
I guess I am going to have to suck it up :-(

My favourite is: “ that will be $8.00 today”
my response: “will it be a different price tomorrow” ?

Don't you mean you're going to have to suck it up yourself :D
