This little jaunt had its genesis on 19 April 2018 when I received a PM (‘conversation’ in new parlance) from @juddles, touching base. He and I first made personal contact when he very generously helped me out with some internal flight bookings in Colombia and invited me to spend a weekend with his family outside Medellin, back in 2015.

(As an aside, my flight out of Australia was QF F SYD-DFW. The story of Rebecca, @juddles’ daughter’s QF J PJ-clothed doll that often featured in AFF posts back then, how @juddles and his family were going to be hosting a stranger through a FF forum and Mrs juddles’ predilection for Champagne was enough to garner a bottle of Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill and a couple of pairs of F pyjamas to offer my hosts. Must love QF at times!: Let's mix it up and fill in some experience gaps: RTW 2015)

The message from @juddles contained this intriguing comment, probably related to my penchant for annual DONExs: “Rather than endlessly do loops of the planet, why don't you pick somewhere (Chile) and stay a while?” He went on to talk about his fishing village house and things to do in that region (Region IV).

Now, I’ve been to Chile many times over almost the last 20 years, but Region IV, centred around La Serena about 500 km N of Santiago) is one part I haven’t yet got to apart from flying over it on the way to the Atacama region further north.

Funnily enough, I had at about this time been casting around in my mind for somewhere to go using QF points. So, I didn’t need any more prompting. After a swift reply to check suitable dates (just after the summer school holidays in Chile finish at the end of March) and advise @juddles that I’m prone to instant decisions, that instant decision was made.

I jumped onto QF and of course there was nothing in the way of J redemptions on QF SYD-SCL around late March. BUT – ding! There are seats PER-xDXB-SCL on EK!

What’s going on, I think to myself? I didn’t know EK flew to SCL. Well, they didn’t at that time but were due to start in July 2018, by extending the DXB-GRU service on to SCL to turn around there. How is THAT for sweet timing I think to myself!

An instant decision was made to snare PER-xDXB-SCL and it was all locked away by 23 April - within four days of @juddles’ message. I decided to think about the homeward flights later after considering a few other things that have been on my to-do list in South America.

A few weeks later I locked in a QF points redemption in QR J EZE (Buenos Aires)-xDOH-PER, for six weeks in South America. Sweet! And a nice EK/QR J flights coughtail to boot.

I bought a few LA el-cheapos to get from SCL to La Serena (LSC) and LSC-xSCL-EZE, then from AEP (Buenos Aires)-Salta (SLA) in NW Argentina and back. A drive around the Salta region has been on my must-do list for many years. (And it will mean a truckload more kays on the fabled Ruta 40 @RooFlyer).

While I’m in Buenos Aires, I also decided to take the ferry over to Uruguay for about a week to drive around there for the first time.

So, come tomorrow night, I’m on the bird to DXB, with Thursday night there before the Friday morning ride to GRU (1.5h layover) and on to SCL.

Here are the flight routings and the general driving points for Uruguay and Argentina, while @juddles has some cool plans for the time around La Serena in Chile.

The Argentina circuit will take in the contrast between the arid high Andes and the moister western plains, while Chile will be from the dry coast to the fertile valleys and the arid heights of the Andes.

For some reason the last pic wouldn't upload properly.

I have only just seen the joint TR that @juddles started. Much of my posting to this report will be upon return, when I can upload my camera photos to my PC and play with them more easily than on an iPad or iPhone.

Hauling out of PER 18 hours late at 1600h (pilot fell ill), but at a much more pleasant time of day to fly.

In the re-jig I lost 7A and ended up in 11K - apparently to teach me what an A380 wing looks like:D. It turned out to be the better side for the view.

I enjoyed dinner, even if the crew did serve it very quickly and sort of rushed it as they do on the normally-scheduled 2220h departure. They must work to a plan that sticks with the original schedule.

The confit duck was particularly good.

I had the Chablis with the soup, the Bordeaux with duck and added the Shiraz with the cheese. One thing I do like about EK is they always have excellent cheese IMO.

The delay had no effect on my connection in DXB as I had planned staying there a day.

BTW JohnM, I have secured a particularly great bottle of red wine to share - let's save it for a special evening, and I look forward to your comments about it (I cannot describe wine) :)

Sounds good :). I have a couple of WA reds in my bag, too ;).

I’m not much good on deep descriptions, either. Maybe we need @Daver6 to come in on a virtual reality channel ;):D.

I saved you some from Wed night*....because apparently enjoying some champagne before a flight is nothing something you do :p

The ride DXB-GRU. SCL pax stayed on the bird for the 90 min layover. 4h run to SCL followed. Watching the cleaning and preparations going on was very interesting. They go at it like one-armed bricklayers in Baghdad.

I had a shadow for GRU-SCL (not that it makes a lot of difference). I was about to take a pic of dinner when we hit one sharp bump. Red wine splashed all over the tray, so I abandoned the pic. Wine list was the same as the previous leg. Meal was a little simpler in that the starter and main came together.

Some pics from the first leg (15h).

The flank steak impressed. Juicy and meltingly tender.

After almost two fabulous weeks with @juddles, reported elsewhere, I departed La Serena around noon today for Buenos Aires, via SCL.

Clear day around LSC today gave a good view S along the coast, but the bird went directly over the top of @juddles’ house, so I missed getting a pic.

A few hours layover in SCL, followed by the 1.5 h flight SCL-EZE. The Andes look a little different when not covered in snow.

EZE passport control was a breeze but the bags were fairly slow out. Overnight tonight in B A, then taking the ferry over to Colonia Del Sacramento around midday for about a week in Uruguay.

Ferry ride today from B A to Colonia del Sacramento, the old centre of which is World Heritage listed. Pics on my camera will wait until I’m home.

Pax aren’t allowed outside on the ferry, The swell was fairly heavy and the ocean/River Plate estuary brown all the way.

Delving into some scraps right now at Charco on the seafront in the historic area. Muy bien :).

The local Albarino went very nicely with the baby squid salad starter (big serve, but very light.)

The glow on the horizon is Buenos Aires.

Having a little rest while the Tannat airs before the lamb main arrives...

What was the Tannat @JohnM ? I used to be able to get a great one here from Pepper Tree but haven't been able to source for years : A Limited release 2009 Wrattonbully Tannat. I guess limited release says it all

We have an impatient person here, peeps :D,

I stuck with the Bouza brand. This one was close to top of the wozzer by price on the list. As you can see, Uruguayan wines are pretty heavy duty.

Despite the monster ABV, it was very smooth. Mouth-filling of course, and a long lingering tarry/mocha taste with an acidic overtone,

Would I say a favourite? Probably not, but a very good experience nonetheless. My first time in Uruguay, so I needed to stretch a little. Worked well with the robustly-flavoured lamb.

Before anyone chimes in: I have booked here again tomorrow night when I will finish the half of each of these bottles remaining. I do - reluctantly - have limits :(;):).
