Looking at AKL-SYD flight for 12,600 points + tax .

is it a good value redemption ?

I've looked at this over and over and I can definitely say the surcharges do not do the deal any justice.

My thoughts too. The surcharges ended up being what a cheapo fare with another airline would amount to! Well almost.

I've found this type of promo to be ok value when needing/wanting to fly to regional towns that are usually disproportionately expensive for a short distance. Eg, PER - KGI was a good value redemption for me last time this promo came around.

I've just been looking at ways to get to Thailand and even with the discounted award rate the points end up valued under 1c/point.

Cancelled & rebooked CNS/CGK via SYD later in the year for two pax, 27,600 points back into my account after the 6,000 points cancellation fee. All good, agree the so called taxes & fuel surcharges are a joke.

How much are the charges? You can often get a sale fare under $200 (& JQ sale well under).
Hong Kong (& Singapore?) are 20k points as a comparison.

Whilst looking to see if there was any value in this offer for me (there wasn't) I ended up nabbing myself a Premium Economy Classic Reward from SYD-HKG return for the mandatory office Christmas Shutdown (Boxing Day through New Years Day) for 90k points plus $380 in taxes/surcharges.

Whilst this may not as good value as a J redemption (there weren't any to anywhere I wanted to go for that week, and I had no spare leave to stay away longer), I'm quite happy as the same paid seats were $2,610. So value was 2.47 cents per point; and the taxes/surcharges were much less than any economy tix for anywhere I would consider at that time of year.

*** Edited because I forgot about the current Amex Cash back promo for Qantas spend of >$300, so will be getting $40 from Amex, bring redemption value to 2.5 cents per point.

Can be good for domestic flights though? Return SYD-MEL for 11,200 points + $72 vs $370 cash fare. Does this look like good value?

Potentially 2.7c/point. Quite good value. Same for SYD-BNE although surcharges are ~$82.

I just can't find any value in international. I may book a few of these for daughter.

I'll be booking a few CBR-BNE flights during this promo. 5,600 points + $57.52 still compares quite favourably to the $239+ cash fares.

I think South America is possibly the sweet spot for this offer internationally as ticket prices are still pretty high to get there. Qantas currently has a sale with return tickets from $1098 for Sydney to Santiago return although you are more likely to find tickets at 1200 - 1400. This compares with regular prices starting from around $1500. Current rewards sale prices are reduced from 90k to 63k + $400. This makes a minimum return of 1.1c per point. I managed to get a booking this morning (well before 11am as it happens) that equated to 1.27c pp as cash price was $1198. SInce then rewards tickets have sold out on the outward leg and the cash fare has risen to $1798!

For me anything north of 1c pp is acceptable.

Just out of curiousity I checked if there was any avail for Lord Howe Island. Seems be no award availability whatsover save for a single day in May (And it was discounted to 8400 from SYD via BNE). Seems a bit suss...

To clarify, I'm getting some booking errors via online. May have to ring them up if you want to go for it?

The offer T&Cs say this:

To receive the 30% discount, all flights in your Trip must be eligible Classic Flight Rewards which are Economy Classic Flight Rewards on Qantas operated flights with a QF flight number (excluding Qantas operated flights to Lord Howe Island), Jetstar operated flights with a JQ flight number or Jetstar Asia operated flights with a 3K flight number on your ticket to Qantas and Jetstar domestic and international destinations, and Jetstar Asia international destinations (this includes Australian domestic transfers on Qantas flights with QF flight number).

Agree, CBR is a public service HUB so pricing Is inflated. There are small time periods when Parliament is out where you can get a decent fare but otherwise CBR is a good reward value

Well, if cash is tight as it was for me late last year, (no income for 3 months)

This was a decent option to fly J (on the 747) SYD-PER AND back PER-SYD-CBR. Yea no J discounts but did you see the actual fares. Cross country J around $5,000 return....gulps

I did a string of Y redemptions in September 18 so the points saved ended up being healthy.
Often, limited rewards ADL-Syd direct, so the dog leg via MEL is same points more flying = happy Daze

As ADL-PER is 18,000 points, (even if via MEL), this is decent value (discounted to 12,600) is fair value. (ESPECIALLY when I’m flying 3 PAX there)

In effect, I think I got 3 for the price of 2!

AKL - SYD tax around $85 per person . workout to be ~ 1 cpp for $200 one way fare .

HKG and SIN tax is around ~ $300 last time i check
