QANTAS GROUP TO SLASH WASTE TO LANDFILL, PLASTIC IN MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL PUSH
FREQUENT FLYER ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVE

As part of its broader approach to sustainability, the Qantas Group enables customers to fly carbon neutral when they book through qantas.com (opens in new window)[1] (opens in new window). From mid-2019, customers will earn 10 points for every dollar spent offsetting their travel from Australia. For example, a return Melbourne to London flight would equal $47 and earn members 470 Qantas Points. It is the highest standard earn rate of any Frequent Flyer initiative and is designed to increase the take-up of carbon neutral flying[2] (opens in new window).

“Around 10 per cent of passengers already choose to offset their flights so we’re hoping that the added incentive of earning Qantas Points helps to boost this number,” added Mr Joyce.
So, with the LHR example, I pay $47 to garner arguably 940¢ worth of QF points.

† if a point is worth 2¢

At the same time it looks like the price of the carbon offset has gone down. If I recall correctly, it used to be close to $2 for SYD-BNE but after a little break I bought one a few days ago for MEL-SYD for $0.95. A good thing from the buyer's perspective but would, of course diminish the points earn. There's also the question of whether the program now collects less funds and has potentially a lower impact?

Well if QF would offer SC for the carbon offset they might have a few more interested flyers?

Just wandering

I slummed it in the SYD QP this morning as I was with a work group with some SGs and I couldn’t get everyone into the J lounge.

QP don’t do takeaway cups anymore “to reduce their carbon footprint“. I’ve definitely seen them in the J lounge recently, is this a difference between the lounges or a change waiting to come to all lounges?

On board in J the pre departure beverage service was placed by handing out mini water bottles. Please tell me this isn’t a thing - for one it makes them hypocrites due to the unnecessary plastic - it was not even a normal size so it’s too small to be useful by refilling in flight.

All a bit of a joke really. I guess it’s whatever suits Qantas.
