As I posted in the '2019 travel plans' thread, we are heading off to Bandar Seri Bagawan, the capital city of Brunei, to catch up with some of my wife's relatives. I don't expect an excitement packed visit for our 7 night stay. However, we hope to get into the jungle a little bit.

We are flying QF in J for the Per-Sin-Per legs as during their New Year Sale they undercut SQ by about a $1,000 per person. We will then try out Royal Brunei for the second leg. As there are only two Royal Brunei flights per day from Singapore to Brunei our arrival time meant there was no available connection. We had to stop at least overnight so we decided on three nights in Singapore at The Village Hotel Katong.

The check in process for our QF flight was pretty uninspiring. There was no specific check in for International pax and there were also a couple of domestic flights being checked in at the same time. There were only 2 counters open for all "priority" passengers and the queue was longer than the Economy line. We tried the bag drop machines as we had checked in on-line but they wouldn't accept our details so a QF staff member had to come and assist us. She seemed to be doing the same for almost all people using the machines. I can certainly say that Scoot's treatment of their Scootbiz pax at check-in at Perth Airport felt more "premium" than what we encountered with QF.

However, I must add that all the staff we dealt with were very pleasant and were trying their best to handle a system that was not working well. I don't know if this was a normal day or if some staff shortages or IT problems had occurred.

In Perth there is no dedicated J lounge for International passengers boarding in Perth. You have to use the Domestic J lounge and then be processed through immigration afterwards. The domestic J lounge was very lightly populated with not a piece of hi-viz clothing in sight. However, because of this process we had to pass through two security checkpoints - a domestic one to get to the lounge then a second International security check after immigration. To make it even more annoying, I had to take off my belt at the domestic checkpoint but was told to leave it on at the International one.

Our waiting plane, named King Valley. Again the priority queue seemed almost longer than the "normal" one, even though they did police it. No carry-on bags were weighed.

The compulsory leg room shot. I felt there was more foot space in this seat than on the QR A380. However the seat itself itself was mechanically very worn. It shuddered when changing positions and a couple of the preset buttons were not working. More worryingly, the inertia reel function for the sash part of the belt failed when I put it back onto the lap belt prior to landing in Singapore. I did report the problems to a FA on disembarkation.

The entree of Sesame and soy poached chicken was tasty and had a lovely bite. The chicken was moist and tasted fresh. There was also the usual uninspiring salad of tasteless leaves that seems to be favoured by many airlines.

DSCN4212 - Copy.JPG

I had a main meal of Tandoori Grilled Lamb with rice. The rice was a bit dry but the meat and vegetables were tasty and tender. But it had obviously never been anywhere near real tandoori spices.

DSCN4214 - Copy.JPG

My wife had a roasted vegetable salad with caramelised bacon. She said it was tasty but served a little too cold.

DSCN4213 - Copy.JPG

We both finished off with a Vanilla creme with almond praline and raspberries. It was lovely. I had a glass of Tokay with mine.

DSCN4215 - Copy.JPG

Before arrival we were served a mini quiche which was also fine.

The food was perfectly acceptable. Even better the service on board was very good with all the FA's we encountered being pleasant and helpful. A good crew.

The Village Hotel in Katong is a bit out of town but we like the area and there are plenty of buses to catch to get into centre of the city. As it is an older hotel the rooms are pretty big for Singapore - 29 m2 - plus they have a balcony. There was a special on and we got the three nights for S$423 which is pretty good for a reasonable hotel in Singapore.

Part of our room before I messed it up.

Looking forward to the Brunei bits

Just a few photos of Singapore before we move onto Brunei

The Masjid Sultan Mosque in Kampong Glam. We were going to go to eat at Zam Zam but we were too early in the day for lunch

Actually it was only a quick walk-around but we felt that Kampong Glam is becoming very gentrified and seems to have lost a bit of its character.

In case you forgot what Lunar Year it is.

We bid for an upgrade and got it. We ended up paying less than half the "normal" J fare. There were 6 pax in a 12 pax J cabin. There were 2 FA's serving the J cabin.

For those hot-blooded people it had individual air nozzles - which I also prefer.

I am 6ft 3 in the old money and had plenty of room. My legs are stretched out to the max. There is an IFE box on the floor in front of the window seat, but my wife was too short, 5ft 7, for it to be a nuisance. There was a good range of TV shows and movies available on the touch screen monitors.

Nuts and Ginger Beer to start - it is a 'dry' airline after all

Starter of grilled salmon with salad and soya vinaigrette. The pink bowl at the top of the tray is the dessert of raspberry mousse

My wife's main of Lemongrass fried seabass with curry sauce

Our meals were very nice. There were also options of Mushroom ala Grecque and Chicken Paprika. So a choice from four main meals on a 2 hour flight.

Most of the city centre of Bandar Seri Bagawan from the air - as you see it was a lovely day. You can spot the Kampong Ayer (water village) on the river - it is the biggest in the world.

I must be tired as I read the title as, "A date with a soulmate"

My brother used to fly Royal Brunei a bit and I think he said that although it was a dry airline you could take your own alcohol. Do you know if this is still the case or it’s been tightened up (as a few things have been)?

Sorry, but I don't really know. Everything I could see on the Net says that is still what happens but there is nothing really authoritative about their policy. Certainly no-one was drinking alcohol on our flight

Trying to keep up with the TR is very hard as we are out all day and not getting home before about 10 pm and very tired.

Our plane arrived abort 15 minutes early on a 2 hour trip. There was only a load of about 60 so we loaded very quickly and left early. On arrival we paid our B$20 each for our visa, picked up our bags and were in the hotel shuttle bus within 20 minutes of landing.

Our first impressions of the city are that is cleaner than any Malaysian city we have been in and it actual rivals Singapore in that regard. The people have all been very friendly and helpful and there has never been the slightest hint of disdain to us as non-muslims. There seems to be a general liking for the Sultan. We have had stories told us by Eurasian Catholics, Malays, and Iban about how happy they are with the Royal family. Even Prince Jefri who caused a lot of angst with his excessive spending a few years ago is back in town and apparently much better behaved.
Anyway a few photos of BSB.

Looking towards the CBD. The large building is the Dept. of Home Affairs.

P1030294 - Copy.JPG

Right in the 'dead' centre of town. My relatives tell me that only those who work in the Govt. buildings etc go there. There are a couple of large malls plus plenty of shophouses surrounding the city.

Some country's High Commission is housed here.

Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Mosque - 1958 - from the river. We saw a crocodile swimming just off this Mosque.

A small part of the Kampong Ayer. It is 1 Brunei dollar to get a speedboat across.

P1030302 (2).JPG

Our hotel - the top two stories. Just under $80 a night including airport transfers and an excellent breakfast with lots of local food. My wife is almost certainly the only non-muslim female staying here. But everyone has been absolutely friendly and often come up to have a chat with us. The construction work has caused no noise problems so far.

DSCN4236 - Copy.JPG

It is only a couple of years old and very clean. the rooms are a bit stark but very large. There is still a very practical bathroom, mini fridge and fast free WiFi. We have a King Bed and you could fit a Queen Bed alongside.

DSCN4238 - Copy.JPG

I couldn't resist a proboscis monkey photo here.

We are currently having a siesta in our hotel room as between 12:00 and 14:00 every Friday all shops, offices etc are closed for Prayer time at the Mosque. We were reminded by the hotel staff to eat early.

We went on an about 2 hour boat trip upriver. For 5 of us it cost B$20 per head. The boat, arranged through the hotel, left from a jetty about 50 metres from here. It the went down our local creek to join the main river. After passing part of the Kampong Ayer we went past the Sultans Palace (Istana) and into the smaller mangrove section to look for monkeys.

My wife was just a few seconds too late to catch the crocodile swimming here before it dived. I just put this photo in to show haw close to the city it was. The large mosque is just to the right of the island.Reading the local paper, there are increasing problems with crocodile incursions. They believe it is due to their normal habitat areas being reduced due to ongoing development. We saw 2 more crocodiles yesterday when we went further up-country.

P1030314 (3).JPG

The Istana. It is pretty hard to get a good view, the front entrance has numerous trees blocking views and the only real views are from above or from the river. Even from the river most of the building is hidden by trees. It is the world's largest palace, probably, with 1,788 rooms Istana Nurul Iman Facts - Istana Nurul Iman It also acts as the seat of government.

The next day we went on an all day trip to the Ulu Temborung National Park. Ulu Ulu Resort - Ulu Ulu Resort - National Park, Temburong, Brunei Darussalam To get there you have to catch a high speed small ferry from Bandar to a small town called Bangar. (Brunei is split into two halves separated by a stretch of Malaysia (Sabah). Bandar and Bangar are in different halves of the country. You can either take a long road trip and cross the border twice each way or take a shorter ferry trip.) From Bangar you the travel about 18km on a very rough bitumen road and then travel for about 30 - 40 minutes in a longboat.

It is not a cheap day trip - B$150 each (A Brunei dollar is equivalent to a Singapore dollar.) However, this price does include a pick -up/return from your hotel, at about 0715, the two way ferry trip, the van transfer, the longboat ride, lunch and a guide. As we were the only two on this particular trip we got the guide to ourselves.

The ferry. it carries about 20 people in maximum discomfort. We actually saw another two crocodiles on this trip. One was semi-submerged while the other had climbed out of the water onto a log and was sitting with his jaws agape. He was at least 3 metres. Unfortunately the ferry is going so fast and most of the acrylic windows are salt blasted to bare opacity so that there was no chance of getting photos.

DSCN4263 (2).JPG

Inside the ferry. The padding on the seat was of little effect. You have to wear a lifejacket. But they are so small I could only get one arm through mine. Anyone who has been on river ferries in Malaysia knows that there is almost no chance of escaping from inside in an emergency. The lifejacket will just keep your body gently bobbing against the submerged roof.

The longboats used for the second water leg

DSCN4347 (2).JPG

The guide, a young Iban woman, said that there had been extremely poor rains recently and that the river was unusually low. She and the boatsman had to get out in one set of rapids and drag the boat over some rocks.

In the longboat Sorry a bit of duplication problems)
