Cancelled reward flight paid on a since cancelled CC. Help!

They are refusing to talk to me in person. They say only a stat dec will do. I’d like to know what people do who don’t have access to a JP are supposed to do.

I think you will find most places only refund to the original credit card used to minimise fraud. A stat dec is not unreasonable to cover their own butts

JPs are pretty easy to find.

Isn't an option just to get it refunded to the cancelled card, contact the bank of the cancelled card, and get them to refund you?

Well, it maybe it’s an option I don’t know I’ve never done that before. Now, the QF text line has just cut me off and will not speak to me. They are really testing the frustration level.

Just called AMEX. They told me that when they receive the money from QF, they will write to me and let me know my account is in credit and then I can transfer the money to my other account.

So did you prepared a letter / statement, with the cc details they require and then get it signed as a stat dec and then emailed it to QF?
In progress, completed my declaration today, I can get it witnessed up at my local shops on the weekend and will then send off. I've got the email address if you need it

After starting the text chat at 3.10 today, the conclusion just now is that after I phoned AMEX who said they’d accept the refund, QF will credit to the original cc. Refund takes 10-14 days as does the points refund.

The whole conversation seemed intractable.

QF hasn’t asked me to rate the conversation. o_O

The schemes (Visa, MC, Amex) all require that merchants issue refunds back to the original form of payment. This is to stop fraud from happening by siphoning money off card A, and then refunding to a fraudster's card B. The protection is there to protect you as the cardholder at the end of the day.

If you need a refund, and the card is closed/cancelled, go ahead and let them refund to the original card. Your card account will then be in credit and then you just have to call the bank of that card and get them to transfer the credit balance to whatever bank account you wish. There is no issue with refunding back to cancelled cards, even if it's 6 months since you cancelled the card.

Edit: If your bank found out that you completed a stat dec and emailed it with blatantly unsecured credit card details in plain text, there's probably a good chance they would go well you let out your card details without securing them so any fraudulant transaction is on you. There has been such cases before.

The other issue is that if the original card gave you points they will want those points refunded.

In my case it was a reward flight so the only points are those to be refunded. What QF asked for of the new cc details was only the first x numbers and the last x numbers and then as mentioned up thread, the bank would marry up the middle numbers with your name.

Yep, only took hours to ascertain that crediting back to the original closed card was the easiest option seeing as QF insisted on a stat dec.

Also @Pushka, if you are waiting for a cheque refund, you may want to ask them when it was posted, just in case they forgot to mention that they can't do that after all.

My issue is that I can’t find the details of which bank I had the Amex card with so I don’t know who to contact. I’ve checked my usuals. And the merchant can only give me the last four numbers.

I've never seen a case of points being clawed back for a closed account, so it's ironically in the cardholder's favour.

What were the last 4 digits and when was the original transaction?

Please feel free to private message the last 4 digits if you don't wish to post it publicly, although the last 4 digits of a card number won't reveal anything about you as it's far too ambiguous (for good reason).

Hey madrooster - the last four digits are 1311 and the booking made late March 2018.

What info are you giving them? They are not clear on it.
Sent my Stat Dec in via email today, within a couple of hours, a very nice lady gave me a ring, asked for the FULL account number I wanted the funds credited back to and processed the transaction. Points back in my account immediately, funds within 5-7 days though I would not be surprised to see them within a day or two as she confirmed entries have been posted.

Easily the best interaction I have ever had with Qantas, if only it could be that painless all of the time

Can't be Amex themselves - the third last digit would be a zero if it was.

Can't be NAB - they canned all their Amex cards 21/02/2018.

Can't be ANZ - they canned all their Amex cards 05/08/2017.

Could be Westpac - they canned their Amex cards 02/04/2018.

Could be CBA - they canned their Amex cards 31/10/2018.

Does that help?
