I know everyone reads their insurance PDS really carefully (yeah, right...) but just wanted to flag that AMEX credit card insurance does not cover additional cardholders if travelling without the primary cardholder. Came very close to getting burned on this one.

I am confident that tit does - it was one of the changes introduced when the fees were increased

Which Amex card is the OP referring too?

The Platinum Charge card most certainly does cover additional card holders travelling without the primary card holder.

It actually states that they are not covered at all for Travel Insurance regardless of travelling with or without the Primary Cardholder..

"Important: Additional Card Members are not covered for Travel Insurance benefits (see table on page 4)"

Partners and children are covered irrespective of being an additional card member (see the definition of "primary card member" on pg 9).

Actually, the PDS is a real mess. A spouse is counted as a primary card holder, but then it says "Primary Card Member does not include a [sic] Additional Card Member". So what if your wife is an additional card holder? Covered or not? And if a wife is a primary card holder does that mean she is covered regardless of whether you travel or not? These are not arguments you want to be having from a hospital bed in Vietnam...

To Clarify - I had in my mind that the OP was referring to the plat charge. There was a massive re-write on the PDS with the 17 July update with the increased fees so that it is very clear that supp card holders are covered...
Prior to that - they weren't covered.

Platinum Card Member means:
1. the person who is issued an American Express Platinum Card as the
primary account holder or a supplementary or additional Card
Member; and
2. their husband, wife, fiance(e), de-facto or life partner with whom they
have continuously cohabited for a period of six (6) months or more;
and
3. their legally dependent children (including stepchildren or legally
adopted children) who are twenty-four (24) years of age or less and
wholly dependent on them for financial support.

Partners and children are covered irrespective of being an additional card member (see the definition of "primary card member" on pg 9).

We are talking about two different things here.
a) Partners and Children are covered under the definition of Primary Card holder.
b) Additional Card Holders are not covered.
If Partners and Children are also Additional Card holders they are covered, but only under (a), not (b) when travelling with the Primary Card holder.

The OP's warning talks about Additional Card holders not being covered when not travelling with the Primary Card holder.
Additional Card holders are not covered at all... period.

If the Partner is a Primary Card holder they are covered under (a).
If the Partner is a not a Primary Card holder they are covered under (a) if travelling with the Primary Card holder.
If the Partner is a not a Primary Card holder they are not covered under (a) if travelling without the Primary Card holder.
Nobody is covered under (b)

I'm going through this right now - Daughter (Supp card holder) in Bali has had her phone stolen...traveling without me (Primary card holder)
Making claim on plat charge insurance - expecting them to deliver based on post#8 and phone conversation when they increased charges and sent the lovely new welcome pack to me months ago.

She would have needed to "activate" the insurance by booking using the supp card (from my understanding). Was this the case?

This has been discussed in threads before over last 12 months. I know its contradictory, but its clear they are covered.
The policy just excludes your neighbours, the dog, and cousin eddie from sponging free insurance off AMEX.

Ended up booking on mine as for some reason hers kept throwing a fraud alert (We were in Fiji at the time). I am expecting it to be OK as AMEX were the ones knocking back the payment - and still went through the same account :)
