In mid-late Jan 2015 I applied for the Amex platinum charge card and was approved. So right after receiving my card in the mail on Jan 28 I jumped online and asked for Accor Platinum Plus which was a benefit at the time. It got processed and I was informed my Platinum Plus would last until Jan 31 2016. The only night I stayed in an Accor hotel in the 12 months was the free one night from Plus, used at the Gold Coast Sofitel where I was upgraded to a better room due to platinum.

I wasn't willing to pay another $1200 for the Amex Platinum without the benefit of the sign up bonus, so called up and cancelled it on Jan 25. Accor apparently did their "does he still have the Amex card" checking earlier in the month, as a new Accor card with Platinum Plus extended to Jan 2017 turned up in the mail the next day.

That was great, because my wife and I were going backpacking for around 12 months (March '16-17). Although we stayed in hostels most of the time, a nice hotel after a couple of the long haul flights was going to be good.

Roll forward to January 2017, and we have stayed 2 nights in Pullmans and 2 in a Mercure, all booked on advance sales so paying a total of around $320. We have some upcoming bookings, five nights in a Pullman (pay three get fourth night free, plus one free night from Plus), and 9 nights in a Mercure beach result - together totalling around $1200. So in my member year 4 nights stayed and 14 nights upcoming (2 of those free), with total expenditure of just over a grand and a half. After costing them a bit of money with free things we got, you wouldn't think I was that valuable, but lo and behold they renewed my platinum until Jan 2018 as a gesture of good will, but the Plus expired since Amex no longer paid Accor for that.

After getting back home we were poor, so no travel for a while. Accor announced that they were going to switch from the signup anniversary to calendar year for membership renewals, so they were extending everyones. As such, my Platinum expiry went from Jan 2018 until Dec 31 2018.

I just signed on to my Accor account to check if I had any points that I had leftover, and noticed my status was still listed as Platinum with expiry of 31 Dec 2019!

So my expenditure has been paying $1200 for the Amex Platinum (with 120k sign on bonus and all the other benefits), and around $1520 paid to Accor hotels for stays, plus some meals at Accor hotel restaurants while I was Plus.

I have had thanks to the free platinum or plus:
* Those several (around 6) somewhat expensive meals at Accor restaurants where we only paid half price due to Plus
* 7 pullman nights, 1 Sofitel night, and 2 Mercure nights in an upgraded room
* Two of those nights in Pullmans and one in a Sofitel being free
* 9 nights in the Mercure beach place upgraded from the cheapest queen room to the deluxe villa
* free food and drinks in the executive lounges of the Pullman/Sofitel, and we drinks a *lot* of free coughtails in the Bangkok Pullman.
* free minibar (including 4 beers a day for 9 days) in the Mercure beach resort

Assuming that they don't renew yet again at the end of the year, I will have had Accor Platinum for 4 years and 11 months and plus for 2 of those years, just for holding the Amex card for 362 days!

Do Accor usually extend platinum like that for what seems to me like not a lot of booking, or am I just the benefactor of some lucky computer glitch?

Earned Platinum Status with points bonus etc back in December 2015 before the system was changed. Would never qualify again but have retained Platinum status twice since.
Next renewal is April 2019, here’s hoping.
