To all the newly-minted Platinum One frequent flyers out there... I'm curious to hear... what's been your experience so far?

Anything different?

Free upgrades?

... or all hype?

I think we are all overthinking this. It's a clumsy way of getting the right letter to the P1s. Slightly personalised as per L2, or referring to the correct gift (L1 vs L3).
And the clumsiness is simply printing it on the card along with FF number. Really see no need for that.

I've just opened last years gift and letter, and both the letter itself and the address label also have codes, mine was W1L2, so codes are not new to this year after all.

I surmise the Ln is just to delineate the letter (different wording - original/new/whatever P1 status) and it is noted on the outside (the address label) so that the person packing the gift can check that the correct gift is sent with the letter/card (i.e. that the gift matches what is written on the letter/card as the gift being sent).

As for why some of us got headphones and others bubbly this year, I've no idea but I'm not complaining :)

cheers

In 10 years holding a Centurion Amex I received, I think, two $50 bottles of Australian Shiraz, not my favourite. I've appreciated the Comtes as a major step up from Amex purely as a recognition and QF is way better in that regard. I do think a direct reach out from the company to actually ask how you would improve things for P1s and the flying public in general would be engaging, Not just surveys but actually call or email people and ask them stuff (I promise I won't mention a J lounge for ADL).

That line we've received from crew, "you travel more than we do", does in fact ring true. Even though we have all been critical about the company we do want it to continue to to provide great service. We fly so often that we do spot those service slips or simply just those situations that can be improved.

This is a failing of the program in my view. While they may get some of this at the P1 events (I couldn't get to the SYD coughtail thing so don't know) direct one-on-one feedback would be much better. I suspect they know this and just don't want it. Hence meaningless surveys suffice.

Addressing one of juddle's rants :))) re the Christmas gift, this would be an easy and possibly cheaper way to personalise the Christmas gift too. eg, in AJ's card to me next year he might say "Dear Kermatu, we know you'd like more access for P1s to the Chairman's Lounge. Here are three passes for you and a guest to use any time in the next three years".

Hi all, will share the email I just sent to the P1 team after getting home again :)

"Hi there P1 team,

first up Merry Christmas and thanks for the support I have received during 2018 - has been great! It is 1am here in Noosaville - only just got home from overseas after flying QF28 / QF556 - and I know somewhere lurking in the house is yet another bottle of P1 champas - thank you!

But the main purpose of this email is to acknowledge some really wonderful staff on my QF28 flight (departed SCL 22nd Dec).

I was back in Premium Economy for this flight, so did not sleep much during the flight, but I still really enjoyed it. Forgive me for not getting the individual names, but all the staff that attended me in the PE cabin that flight were fantastic. They treated me extremely well, very attentive, obviously happy to make my flight the best it could be. As I just watched movies for almost the entire 14 hrs, this meant an interminable stream of snacks and beverages. One of the ladies even helped me fill in some paperwork as I have a hand injury and cannot currently write with a pen!

I fly enough to recognize when I get an outstanding crew, and this was one of those flights. Being my last trip for the year made it especially good to finish up on a high note with Qantas.

On the short hop on QF556 from SYD up to BNE the ladies were also really nice. Also very proactive in looking after me

Anyway, can you please pass this on to the relevant supervisor or whoever.

And again, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and I look forward to my travels with Qantas in 2019

Judd."

As I just realised that I am done flying for the year, I just looked at some stats. Will share some as a datapoint for the interest of fellow P1's and as a warning to anyone who "aspires" to foolhardily "chase" P1 status:

I did 42 flights this year on Qantas, all purchased direct from QF. I got just over 4000 SC direct with QF, and a couple of others via other One World flights. Although a few were non-upgradeable (ie was travelling in J where there is no F), the vast majority of my QF travel was long-haul PE, with some domestic Y sectors. On the domestic Y flights, it was about 50/50 if there were any vacant J seats, and on the long-haul I do not think there was a single flight where J was full. Despite this I got but 2 upgrades - once from Y to J domestically, and once from PE to J international. I am talking "free - told upon check-in" upgrades here - have almost never been denied a points upgrade.

I have read previously that there is some perception that as a P1 you may get 1 in 10 flights upgraded for free - my experience is 1 in 20. Just so everyone knows :)

As I and others have said many times, P1 is not something you chase - there are no substantial benefits that would merit this. They do do a superb job usually in helping when things go awry. But unless you fly enough that the numbers game means you will inevitably suffer these misfortunes from time to time, it is simply not something that you would spend extra to try to attain.

I do get that in this mini-world of AFF we are all aviation geeks or similar, and so just having attained the dizzy heights of Platinum One could be on your bucket list. But if it is for false bragging rights, just paint your Q tags with liquid paper. Or ask me for mine - I have never used them - a bottle of the cheapest non-Bundy rum will ensure that transaction :)

I just realized that I think it is "illegal" or similar to offer Q-tags for sale. I hope everyone knows that I am not seriously offering them for sale! It was just writing to make a point.
But I do enjoy cheap rum :)
Isn't this punishable by hanging from, and just before the sun rises over, the nearest yardarm?

Hi all,
have noticed things very quiet on this thread for almost a week. Are you people too busy flying??

Just landed here in Haneda off a very full QF25 SYD-HND service (departed SYDNEY 7 Jan). We pushed back about 20 minutes late and landed around 25 minutes late. Spent a large amount of time waiting in the queue for a departure from Sydney.

Having done this sector 4 times over the last 5 weeks in either PE or Y I’ve found the service to be varied. The cabin crew appear to be the more senior from QF. The majority still appear to enjoy the job or as was the case on last evenings flight some of the crew couldn’t get away from the job quick enough. Doing back-to-back red-eyes QF25/26 on 2 * 9hr+ sectors over a 48hr period is a tough schedule.

I've got a month off flying QF. Actually it's more like 7 weeks so I'm quite enjoying being "grounded"

my upcoming QF is a bit sparse, as I've opted for NZ for an upcoming US trip (J sale price just far too good)

so I'm having zero P1 experiences to comment about, and likely won't requalify :)
