New SQ J seats a shocker

Also don’t forget SQ’s Book the Cook, I always love the Lobster Thermidor which is one of the meals only available to order before flight

Thanks. I won’t order the thermidor because it has butter I believe. I can’t have dairy :(

Even with the small foot-well that I agree is an issue for tall pax - they are a similar design to LH and LX in Business - I still prefer the layout to the herringbone layout on airlines like NZ. I find the lack of any privacy, inability to see out the window or even talk to a companion (except across an aisle) most annoying. All first world problems though.

I tried both A380-800 and 777-300 last month to North Korea, and I would say that I rank both behind J seats from CX / QF / VS (not VA haven't tried yet).

The sleeping position is very awkward, and I'm only 170 cm :(

Thanks for the feedback. I’m 170cm as well :(

I’ve only tried VS upper class on your list. It was fine but don’t really like the herringbone layout.

Has anyone tried the 787-10 short/medium haul seat? They fly it to Perth and a few destinations in Asia

Looks like you don't have to get out of your seat to flip it over, which is a massive +

I flew it on SQ215 in August.

It is much better than the previous angle flat 2009 Regional J seat on the A330 or 772's. Having the seat flipped over is not really that much of an issue but it is nicer to be able to recline all the way to flat.

The IFE and power etc are obviously significantly better on the 2018 Regional J on 787 than the 2006 J seat on the 772ER but you have a lot more room in the older seat especially in the bulkhead seats.

It is probably the best all around seat put of PER followed by the 2006 J, the 2009 J are perfectly fine for a day flight but not so great if you want to sleep.

On the seats closer to the window the gap to the aisle is quite narrow if you are of a larger build. Was not an issue for me it also isn't an issue if you are in a window seat closer to the aisle.

Very narrow and uncomfortable if you have broad shoulders. Kept accidentally calling the crew due to poor positioning of the buttons. Footwell is slightly offset from seat adding to the discomfort. If you're fat the table may be tricky to extend unless you get bulkhead seat.

I will not fly this seat again if I can help it.

SQ279 Sin-Adl on A350-900 in J.
The bed configuration is straight, facing the plane. I estimated the max length is about 190cm. Seat was comfortable enough to sleep in, would’ve been better if there’s mattress on top as the seat is leather. Footwell size is similar to QF’s A330’s. Table slides out from underneath the TV screen which is great as it allows you to use the table in varying lengths even if your seat is further to the front in reclining position. Controls are in good position high enough for you to not accidentally trigger them when you sleep, plus the controls are touch screen and the lights goes off after a few seconds so you really have to press the same spot twice to activate. 3 different lighting (sleep, seating and reclining) on the side of the curve back.

The negatives:
The curve back of the seat is rather narrow and would be rather crammed for a larger person. The blanket is somewhat square and not long enough to cover the whole body, I had to ask for 2 blankets. There’s a 10cm gap between the seat and the sides of the plane which is a complete waste of space and would be horrible for the cleaners as you can see in the picture, a stray almond was left there from the previous flights.

Yum!

Or is the big gap easier for cleaners to access?

Is it just the angles you took the photos at, or the seats look very short and narrow to me?

I’m 170cm and it fitted me ok and I estimated about another 20cm length to spare.

Wow...what a wast of space. Each seat could be 2 inches wider!

That looks the same seat as 787-10.

The seat width is narrow due to the shelf below which is the footwell for the seat behind. Using the space that is wasted by the curvature of the aircraft would only help the window seats that are adjacent to the window, but would not help the other seats (including the window seats that are adjacent to the aisle). What would have been better is not to have the wall of the seat which would enable broad shouldered passengers to use the wasted space on the "window" seats and a small part of the aisle for the other seats. That would also have solved the off-centre footwell issue.

J seats on 350 are fine - they knock spots off the new 380 seats
Singapore flies the 350 from BNE too, and I tried it last year both ways. Dreadful in J, (unless you have an uncle) and have a bulkhead in front of you. Your chances are about 1 in 20 or 30, but then you can luxuriate and stretch out while everyone else in J squirms, finally gives up on sleeping and tries desperately to find something to watch.

Then it was an A380 to LHR. Equally bad.

I had hopes of the B777 LHR to SIN. No better.

As RooFlyer has suggested, fly in F, or fly in J with another airline for now.

I got my first J class flights next month, how do i find out if the flights are the newer style seats or the older kind? I am flying to BKK via Singapore from Sydney, my flight going is on a 777 and coming back on a A380 (these are the flights to and fro sydney to sin).
