New Baggage crackdown starts this week at VA

What they need is a dedicated security screening for each airline. That way any excess baggage that goes through screening drops down an excess baggage chute into a bin below and problem solved.

Each full plane taking off 10 minutes early. What a novel idea!

Whack a few once a decade leisure travellers with a $100 excess and word will soon spread. :p

So it’s official now according to VA bosses.

I’m most certainly aware of cases where the bins were crammed full then proceeded to fall off resulting in 10-20kg cases falling on people.

Domestic passengers to have cabin bags weighed from this week

Gate checking is just a standard thing in the states that everyone seems to adhere too...

That article annoyingly conflates 2 issues - overweight bags and oversized/too many bags. Keeps talking about the weight of bags while saying it will counter the problem of over size! Not to say its not a good thing to do, but there are two issues which need different solutions.

Gate checking works in the US because at the gates there are chutes down to ground level where the excess bags can be dispatched to the hold. Wonder what will happen with QF?

I hope not what the article suggests:

Passengers with bags weighing more than 7kg will have to stow them in the cargo hold with other checked luggage.

Yeah, I can just see the pax carrying their bags down the stairs and tossing them into the hold. ;)

I think both VA and QF need to focus on the amount of time it takes to get your checked bags at the end of a journey. Part of the reason to haul so much aboard is that checked luggage is notoriously slow to be returned (MEL i'm looking particularly at you....).

Happy to see enforcement of carry on limits provided there is a similar focus on checked luggage turn around times.

Gate checking is just a standard thing in the states that everyone seems to adhere too...

Yeah but they also board between 30-50 minutes prior to departure too so that the kitchen sink can be carried on and then gate-checked.

We can board an aircraft in 20...

I still don't see where weight is an issue (for the most part). A better policing of baggage size would be a far better solution.

I'd still like to know what either QF or VA suggest I do when carting 10-15kg of cameras and lenses as carry on, bag fits easily within the permissible dimensions unlike some of the cough you see make it aboard!

Agree with others - mass confusion and conflation of several different issues here.

VA jumping on the QF bandwagon without any attempt at defining what the actual problem is, is the problem a volumetric issue, or a weight issue? Interesting to see the variation in carry-on baggage allowances are almost carbon copies for the full service airlines and the low cost carriers? Isn't that a co-incidence? And why is a 8kg carry-on bag unsafe on a VA and a QF B737 but a 10kg carry-on bag (where the pax has paid the excess carry-on fees) on JQ or a TT A320 or B737 is somehow safe? Where are the statistics and workcover details of cabin crew or pax injured by haevy or awkward bags?

Revenue management masquerading as a safety issue.

Colour me cynical - and that seems to be the theme of the comments both here and on the respective media comments sites....

Was flying today SYD - MEL & MEL - LST absolutely on evidence of VA cracking down on carry on.

Stuff people were bringing on board.....unbelievable

I predict one or two weeks of 'enforcement' to make the point and then everything will generally revert to normal.

One reason I guess weight is used is that it is a definitive measurement. The weight limit is the limit, is easily measured accurately and the result cannot be argued. Overall dimensions are far more open to 'interpretation' by both the airline and the pax (even if a sizer is used).

With the amount of coverage this has got in mainstream media over the last couple of days, I think Virgin could achieve the desired result of this "crackdown" without ever weighing a single bag.

VA863 MEL-SYD not enough space for everybody’s carry on. Staff took 4 bags and checked them in. This is just first 10 rows.

What a crackdown.

crackdown on size and stop the weight nonsense - are they going to refer back to a person's allotted baggage allowance and reference gate check amount against the baggage weight recorded at check-in?

The weight is going to end up on the plane one way or another, being tighter with the size allowances would help with boarding times though (so would keeping crew bags and other equipment out of the row 3 overhead bins where they can't put anything under the seat)

No checking of weight or size on a VA146 AKL-SYD today

Personally I think that enforcing cabin baggage limits is long over due.
People are carrying on board up to 3 items. And then the 3 items are in 3 different places and you're stuck waiting for this person to retrieve their carry-on.

They had scales at the front of the queue on VA OOL-MEL yesterday, but nothing was weighed. Maybe VA is just reminding people not to be ridiculous with the size and weight of their carry on. It seems that VA has had enough trouble running to schedule lately, and I doubt they want to delay boarding by weighing everything.

I think you'll find that CASA is behind this, and it will become the norm, so not just a passing fad.

We've just had an American friend visiting, and I was stunned by how much she carried into the cabin.
