Hi all

Is it possible to book a return flight departing from Melbourne to the US but only taking the return journey?

I have 2 x J award seats booked to take the wife and I to NY on SG but I do not have a return flight booked yet. I see that Qantas have return tickets to SFO for ~ $900 at the moment which includes the date we were looking to head back home.

I was planning to leave NY and then head to SFO for a few days before coming back and with this sale from Qantas it would be ideal to be able to forego the outward flight with them but take the inbound to Melbourne.

Is this allowed?

No, once you don’t fly the first segment, Qantas will cancel all the remaining flights on that booking.
Not what I was hoping to hear but thanks for the info.

I cannot find anything decently priced originating from the US to get us home at the moment. Got time on our side given its not until next year but even so, would be nice to try and lock that down (for the wife's peace of mind)

That’s why some people book a cheap flight out of Oz and then connect from there.

I would look at that but the dates we were looking to come back are now waitlisted with SG or not available at all and that is where the miles sit.

The only other option I suppose is to look at coming back J on another carrier that I can use my SG miles with.

If you can find a sale fare on the Qantas US site for a return ticket (where the outbound fare is to Australia), then you could take the first leg (SFO-MEL) and just not take the return leg.

Roughly 1200 AUD for a return SFO-MEL-SFO on QANTAS, or Air NZ.

One way SFO-MEL on FJ is around 900 AUD.

One way SFO-HNL can be around 300-400 AUD on United, AA, Delta, Alaskan or Hawaiian.
One way HNL-MEL can be around 300 AUD on Jetstar.

Consider using AAdvantage miles, Lifemiles or Alaskan miles for other options, if you want Business.

You could also try AA F to HNL connecting with Jetstar 'business' from there.
