Speaking personally, and one that wont be popular on AFF
Actually thought to would be the opposite
However if Qantas is the worse F cabins out the OP just imagine how much fun exploring the rest will be
For me I spend my points on upgrades or reward flights. That for me is the best use and the most fun

...why not.

for me at least... because you shouldn't have to spend an extra 75K points just to get a decent product. At the prices QF charges for its standard J it should be a phenominal offering - outstanding lounges, great amenities, an intersting and varied menu, vintage wines and champagnes and a much higher crew-to-passenger ratio. It's none of those. You might touch on that in F, but you shouldn't need to at those prices.

OP already has a J ticket so they are at a different starting point.
Not that I disagree with any of what you've said.

I bid the min and as I was travelling solo my upgrade to F came through at check in. Def worth it for the sleep.

Ha, this is why I love these forums - so many varied opinions, and all really appreciated!

Will definitely report back on success or failure (in the appropriate thread!) of the upgrade request and subsequent experience (whether J or F).

The way back is definitely cheaper (45k points from memory) - and I think I'm going to request both and see what happens. One of the main reasons I went all out and just went for it was because the DSC promotion means that this trip earns over 1400 SC in a onner, and so moves me from NB obscurity to WP once the bonuses hit.

I have flown QF F on the A380 to the US several times, the last being about 9mths ago, but being one who finds it difficult to sleep on flights (even in F) I don't think I will be doing F again. In saying that, the experience is incredible and I still remember the first time I did it in 2001. I really hope your upgrade occurs so you can enjoy what others sometimes take for granted. There is usually four Flight Attendants looking after the 14 F pax and from experience, you really do get looked after with great food etc.

Just looked at EF .... your chances are fair to good. F5 / A5 ... I vote, go for it.

You may never get another chance. Give it a crack.

I presume 75k is the cost one way? If so, on the way out of Australia will give you F lounge access in Sydney or Melbourne. No difference in lounge in Singapore or London.

Qantas business on the A380 is comfortable but not private and not that special. F is much better seat and more private, but be aware food and drinks are almost identical to business.

Chance of n upgrade depends on your status. If you are prepared to give us that and your exact flights we can take a look at current flight loads and give you some information (although it's still a bit too early to be definitive).

How does one look at flight loads for a particular flight?

cheers Peter

Yes, for the bed alone. The Qantas 380 1st class bed remains one of the most comfortable in the skies whereas the business 380 bed is lumpy and thin in the cushion. On a long flight you’ll appreciate the difference.

I am another vote for doing it - points are pretty easy to come by.

I refuse to pay for Qantas F anymore, because it is not worth the money in terms of quality of food, wine and service was disappointing on my last couple. However you can also get really good service - just inconsistent, Recently I paid for J Qatar flights (Qsuites), to New York, rather than heavily discounted Qantas F flights, which were almost the same price, that’s how anti Qantas F I have become :)

But points are different - looks decent value to me and I am a big fan of the Qantas bed.

3. Is first class worth the 75k points?
Do you like alcohol? Honestly, I think that's the most important question.

I can sleep in either J or F. The food is acceptable in either. The big difference is the alcohol.

The booze in A380 F is vastly more expensive than in J. (esp. Champagne and the liqueur muscat and liqueur tokay.) The booze in the F lounge may be vastly better than in the J lounge. (The only F lounge of theirs I've used is in LAX. It has lovely wines and the J OW lounge has nothing I would drink.)

Unless you really love the booze, I'd save the 75k miles for another trip.

take the dive and experience what QF offers than fly much better first class products like EK-SQ and you will see the huge difference -u will never go back to QF after an SQ or EK first class experience for sure ;-)

Depends what flights or fares are available. I regularly move between QF, EK and BA F and wouldn’t eliminate a carrier because it is worse in some aspects than another. Each carrier has its plus points.

Each to their own. I value more space, increased privacy, higher staff to pax ratio and a better sleep than alcohol quality. QF F wines, apart from the Champagne, haven’t been high quality for a number of years now.

Spirits quite ordinary too (at least in comparison to EK and SQ).

I put in a request recently MEL > SIN and the first upgrade came through. I thought it was great, and as I’m not platinum I don’t ordinarily have access to the first lounge. So given access to that lounge, including the spa and then a day time flight to enjoy the food and service onboard it was worth it. On the rerun flight i decided to not put in a request on the basis there is no QF 1st lounge in Singapore and as it was an overnight flight, I don’t think sleeping in first vs business is differentiated enough to justify the points.

Have been mulling this over even though I answered yesterday :)
I can remember my first 1st class in Qantas...actually first 1st class
Son and I were off to London ,nope not to see the queen:) , to see his girlfriend (now wife).
Husband and I decided to treat him
It was amazing..we had a wonderful day in the lounge . He invited a friend in who was also travelling back to London that day
The staff were welcoming and ...I have amazing memories . Qf1 staff amazing. Pleasant etc
I think sometimes after a load of travelling some of us may become a bit disillusioned about travelling
First can be special. So if only going to get to do once (taking into account you have already bought your business in Qantas )
Put in the request
