China - never a dull moment!

Had thought the same - and figured having some stations without escalators to walk up stairs forcing people to carry their bags up stairs forced a lot of people to pack lighter.

Harsh about the butter knife. I travel in China with a 5" sharp paring knife in my bags which I used to cut up fruit from the supermarket - dragon fruit mmmmmmm......., and packed away to be clear it is only being transported. 10% of the time they pick up on it and ask to see it - I am noted as having it and sign I have it and checked I don't have plans to travel to Beijing, and left to keep it and carry on.

The Chinese consulate has contracted a visa service to do all their visas for them. Same in Melbourne (and I guess other Aussie cities as well): Chinese Visa Application Service Center

You drop off your application and passport and pick it up three days later. A small tip - most people seem to drop off their applications Monday and Tuesday, and collect Thursday/Friday. The lines for each can be lengthy. If you drop off on Thu/Fri and collect on Mon/Tue, those lines can be shorter as you're sort of going against the peak flow. .

Agree ........ but I am thinking the thought is more getting to/from HK is just going out of the way from the normal route of flying via SIN combined with 9 hours of rail vrs 2.5 hours flying it should you need to do HK to PVG or PEK trip - flying will win over.

Dunno! But unless there was anything contrary on the website I'd imagine it would be the standard three days plus post time each way (which can be up to 3-6 days now for standard delivery? Shorter for express/registered post)

Even worse would be to confuse the toilet with the week electricity room. That would not only blow your trousers off but everything else as well.
 
I loved Shenzhen, was there for 8 days and the inner tech/electronics geek in me was highly impressed.

I visited some electronics factories (PCB production, mobile, prototypes, audio gear, packaging) and really impressed by the quality in most cases.

I could walk out of the hotel, walk 50m and buy CNC machines, 3d printers, all types of LED lights.

in HQB (sp?)

I was there for a couple of days looking for a specific component, couldnt find it. Back at home, find one on ebay and ordered it, on arrival the senders address was a certain building in HQB that I probably spent two hours in.
 
Yeah HQB Plaza hotel is where I stayed
Yeah the SEG building is 30-40 storeys of components. Only made it to L12.

There are specific buildings for specific type of components around HQB. Was totally overwhelmed the first couple of days at the markets
