Sick of flying :(

Yes @drron ... but in my humble opinion. The one thing Peru has gotten right, is long distance buses! They are equivalent to a Y+ for total service, but seating can be close to J. But still, this will take 2 trips, one of 6 hours, a 3 hour break, then one of 9 hours...(help me:()
Actually it has been found that the more comfortable the seat the higher the risk of DVT.Despite the name economy class syndrome it is actually more likely to happen if sitting in F-from a BA study.
Make sure you keep those legs moving.

I may have the bull from the wrong end ..... but, have I read posts that you're currently not working, taking some sort of unpaid sabbatical? If so, why travel if you're sick of it?

amaroo, it is complicated. Have family in Australia, very important time there with eldest just finishing school and off to uni next year, but I also have a need to be in Chile. A trawl through my "reflections" thread may provide an answer, maybe :(

i can understand totally; I'm about to post a part trip report on the one i am on now which has been extended 5 times. I left Australia Aug 27th for a month and still away! This trip so far, remembering i had a 7 day turn-around before it; MEL > BKK > CNX > BKK > VIE > ATH > AXD > ATH > LHR > VIE > BKK > CNX > BKK > HKG > LAX > RNO > OAK > RNO > LAS > DEN > LAS > RNO > LAX > HKG > BKK > ICN > KWJ > ICN > BKK > HKG > LAX > RNO but still to go so far RNO > LAX > LGW/LHR > FRA > ATH > AXD > ATH > LHR/LGW > LAX > RNO > OAK > RNO > LAX > HKG > BKK > CNX > BKK > MEL!!!!!!

Holy cr@p, Batman!

It's not the flying that is an issue. I generally just kick back, headphones on, and snooze. The problem is the travel delays IMHO. Connections, transfers, tech issues, weather delays (a biggie for me), luggage delays etc. It's tedious sitting at a remote terminal (with absolutely nothing on offer, not even toilet paper) for hours on end on rock hard seats with no information as to what is happening. My most regular commute is technically 5.5 hours of flying. To date, I think the longest travel time I've done that in is just over 50 hours and the shortest is about 24 hours. The flying is not the problem for me and my job is very rewarding so I'm not complaining.

Around 80k miles... o_O

In 10+ years commuting travel delays are my biggest gripe. You do more connecting than I do but it can certainly take it out of you.

Try to plan everything in advance such as working back through the week to leave early on Friday and get to airport only to find 2-3 hour delays. Same coming back. Flight delayed and miss last bus/train and then need to make new plans and before you know it you realise it has been over 6 hours since you left home for a simple SYD-BNE.

And yes a lot of the delays could be weather related but the airlines not being proactive can certainly have an impact. Luckily SYD-BNE has regular flights. I'd hate to be doing say SYD-CNS or what you're doing.

He he ... sometimes it's better not knowing @JohnK. I recently had a flight from Kairik-Mt Hagen-Moresby. At 7500ft, Kairik is usually the biggest drama with weather and I arrived at about 07:00 with perfect conditions. Spectacular sunrise over the Highlands and I though you beauty, no worries today! Anyway, I wait and wait and wait thinking come on guys, get the plane here ... please! Slowly, the cloud starts rising up the valley and I start to worry. Weather changes very rapidly up there and within about 1/4 hour, it was a whiteout, just as I hear the aircraft overhead. They circled for probably about 20 minutes and then returned to Hagen :(. We didn't get another cloud break until about 1pm and I heard the reason why they were late in the morning was that the ground crew didn't bother fueling the aircraft the night before hence the delay which meant I finally arrived in POM about 16:00 rather than about 10:00 and just to really make it fun, we had a power blackout and the standby gen died as well, which took out the only Digicel tower as well as our sat connection so I didn't even have dial up speed internet or even emails! PNG, land of the unexpected! You gotta luv it :).

You young'uns :)
That situation reminds me of everywhere in the world prior to 1996.

. Maybe J-guy is just exercising transference over the poor performance but as an employee-shareholder I would really like him to just use videoconferencing from this point on. If you are whinging about your travel and you don’t need to (ie to chase business) then stop travelling and let the rest of us take your spot.

I tend to disagree with the above - nothing can make up for a face to face meeting. I work for a company with a likely unparallelled generous travel policy and we went to the trouble of buying a teleconferencing company/software and this in no way reduced management wanting us out on the road meeting clients (I reckon our company fills 1/4 of BA's J between LHR-JFK daily).

I'm still young so really relish feeling like George Clooney in Up in the Air. On Juddles point, try not flying for a month and see how crazy you go.
It's not the flying that concerns me but the lifestyle that accompany's heavy work travel. I'm only in my own bed for 5 nights this month and the excess food and alcohol, late nights, hours sitting down in foreign offices or onboard all make for a pretty unhealthy lifestyle and take discipline to remain fit.

In saying that I couldn't imagine life any other way and want to be flying as much or more until I physically cannot.

Understandable. I haven't flown in about two months now and this is the longest I've gone without..although I'm starting to miss it a bit. The airport time really takes a toll on you too. At least 1.5 - 2 hours is spent just travelling to the airport/checking in and then waiting to board. Not to mention waiting for you baggage on arrival and then transport to your destination.

PS: Hello everybody. I haven't posted in a while.

I always find keeping the window shade open and marvelling at the miraculous view a pretty good antidote.

Although that may not intuitively seem a good idea over the open ocean at night, that does actually work for me often :) Have seen some splendid sights in the night sky over antarctica

Not having flown the QF 787 I'm unsure about this but.... does QF keep the electronic window shades shut on the 787 during night flying? I saw a trip report where this happened but don't know if it's policy?

I haven't flown QF's 787 miracle-liner yet.
The TRs I've seen (eg from Paul Stewart) don't seem to have that restriction, but no direct experience.

It wasn't Paul's but someone else's. When QF1 operated BKK-LHR I remember flying over northern India overnight and viewing the lights from a multitude of villages as far as the eye could see really. Spectacular.

I must be flying different routes, I have now stopped booking a window seat because after the first few minutes there is no view except☁️☁️☁️ fluffy white clouds.

I find them pretty interesting too.
Clearly I'm easily entertained.

I average about 5 hours a week flying time for 2018 (SYD MEL and SYD AKL mainly), I don't mind the actual flying that much but the waiting at airports, the delays and being away from my wife and now 2 year old son for as much as I am is taking its toll on life and the more important things. I'm now actively looking at reducing the travel as much as possible to spend time at home.
