I am booked on a business class flight MEL-SIN-ZRH and just noticed that if a change my plans by one day, first class (including a suite on one leg) are available. This would make my husband probably the happiest person on the planet.
The problem is, I will only have enough points for the first class fares after I cancel my business class booking. If it is instant, then great, if not I might lose all options while I wait for the points to arrive back in my account.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Just ring up and and ask to make the change.

I have upgraded from J To F a day later online before. So over the phone it should be easy I would assume.

If the legs are all the same , you should also be able to do it online

Thanks - tried to "manage my booking" online but keep getting an error message at the last step. Now waiting for a call back from the redemption people - fingers crossed.

Okay - so I manged to change my award flight to first class (very exciting). The very nice person at SQ informed me that I would no longer get the 15% bonus for booking online as the rules had changed (fine, I knew that already). She then started to say something about getting a refund for the carrier surcharges, which have reduced significantly since I booked the original award ticket (I paid just over AUD $1000 for two one way business class seats). Before she finished her sentence, however, she stopped herself and started talking about the change fee I would need to pay (SIN$28). So, does anyone know whether I will / should get a $ refund or should I just be grateful for the first class award seat and be done with it?

Hi JennyH

From what I understand you booked a J flight SYD-SIN-ZRH pre March 2017 (old awards) - which should be 80,750 (95K less 15%) points + taxes+ fuel surcharge Per person.
Now your F flight SYD-SIN-ZRH post March 2017 (new awards) - should be 148,000 points + taxes (no fuel surcharge).

So in summary you get a $$ REFUND of Your fuel surcharge less $20 USD rebooking fee per person
You need an extra 67,250 points per person.

Thanks Prozerran - I thought that might be the case. This is what I paid for the original booking late last year:
Cost breakdownMiles
Total miles161,500

AUD
Airport/Government taxes172.78
Carrier surcharges756.20
Total cost928.98
Does that mean I should get the $756.20 back? So far, they have deducted the extra miles for the new flights and issued the ticket, but there is no evidence of charging the rebooking fee or receiving a refund. Maybe it is a slow process, tickets were confirmed last Wednesday.

I can now confirm that I was charged the rebooking fee, but there is no sign of a refund. I rang SQ and they seemed to not understand my question. I can only conclude that there will be no refund for carrier surcharges. So I just need to be grateful for the award ticket and not dwell on it ;)

They seem to understand the 15% more to pay bit. Maybe you need to push them a little harder on the refund? Just doesn't seem correct?

Refunds normally take a while to turn up on the card you booked on. As in weeks.

I would be surprised if the fuel surcharge (YQ) was not refunded as it would seem that they have rebooked you under the new regime.

I rebooked a Suites flight due to change of dates (took it beyond the 12 months) and they charged me the 15%, but refunded the YQ.

Just checked my rebooked flights and the original.. MEL_SIN_LHR for 2 in F/Suites

New

KrisFlyer miles redeemed
296,000 miles
Paid with debit/credit card
AUD 172.78
Original

KrisFlyer miles redeemed
225,250 miles
Paid with debit/credit card
AUD 924.38
$844.38 landed back on my credit card. The difference was basically the rebooking fee per person that would have been charged on $US.

While my statement shows the date to be the same day I cancelled, it did not actually land back on that date.

When you rebooked they should have emailed a confirmation with the revised point and fees costs.

Thankslovetravellingoz - I will keep an eye out for a refund and follow up in a few weeks if nothing eventuates. I never received the normal redemption booking email upon re-booking just an electronic ticket receipt that stated:
"Payment Details: Total: No ADC"http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/members/lovetravellingoz.html and a second email titled "penalty fee". But now I feel confident to follow up if a refund doesn't appear. In the meantime, I will enjoy my travel.

I was just on the phone to them about a similar scenario. I was told that the $ refund can take up to 3-4 weeks to process and be refunded after the new booking is made/changed.

I would be persistent with chasing the refund; as Irishbazz mentioned above, they are quick (i.e. instant) to debit your card for further charges, but refunds are slow to materialise.
Was in a similar situation to the OP and was given 2 differing timeframes across multiple phone calls for the refund of my charges for the cancelled redemption. Asking to speak to a supervisor on the 4th phone call had the the refunds (points & $$) issued within the day...

Thanks to everyone for their advice. Just back from our OS trip in suites ; )
Refund arrived in the credit card account last week, perfect!

Just a question in regards to how the points were re-deposited into your account to enable you to upgrade your award from J to F. I was wanting to upgrade from a standard Y to a saver J. I was unable to manage this on line but the advice I was getting on the phone was mixed and unhelpful despite several phone calls. Several agents were telling me the only option was to cancel and make a fresh booking but the redeposit of points would take 7 days plus. I have read elsewhere that immediate re-deposits can happen but I seemed unable to make this happen. And of course the availability of the awards I was seeing evaporated trying to sort this all out.

Hi all, I have three J award tickets to cancel. BNE - CDG, can anyone confirm the cost/ charges for cancelling.
Can I do it on line or needs to be over phone... cheers and thanks M .

The fees are listed here, depends when you bought the ticket as the fees changed.
Service Fees

and you might be able to cancel it online, go online and see what options you have. Singapore airlines website is pretty good at changing stuff online.

And when you are done can you tell me how long they advise the refund will take? I am waiting now exactly one month for my refund and still nothing yet,

They did tell me on the phone how long it will be, but I immediately forgot. Except that it wasnt 'days'

A month is an exorbitantly long time - I sniff a problem so I would be calling to follow it up.

I cancelled 2 x J LHR-MEL rdpts only a couple of weeks ago and pts were back in account within 48hrs. If you need any assistance PM me and I will get someone to chase it for you.

Generally if you tell them you don't care about any FX losses, they can process it instantly through SG headquarters. Last three cancellations I've had my points back within minutes.

thanks, i have followed up the existing ticket I had on the subject (when I asked 2 weeks ago)

I politely asked for a refund of the $30 fee for the points refund, in consideration that I paid for a service not received :) Lets see how that goes, and i will get back to you on that favour.
