Currently working as a contractor for a UK company and just working part time. Would like to base myself in the UK for a few months next year and think I would be still able to work while there as long as I'm being paid in Australian $ as an Australian contractor.

There is a possibility they might want to visit client sites in England and trying to work out whether I would need to get a visa to do this. I've been before on business and worked at the UK office but only for a couple of weeks.

Does anyone have any ideas on whether visa is required and what sort of visa I would need?

I'm reluctant to send a query to the UK immigration in case it flags me when I visit.

PS I have no other avenue of getting a grandparent visa or similar

Can't help on the visa front but for tax reasons you don't want to spend 182 days or more in the UK, regardless of where you are paid. (...and HMRC is quite stringent in counting weekends, annual leave, arrival and departure days etc)
