First time through WLG - Tips

Anything I need to know either on the way in or on the way out later in the week?

Good J lounge in WLG. Do they still do Kapiti ice cream there?

I believe the aircraft are 737-800. Nothing special

Your post got me thinking, as it'll be my partner's first trip to WLG in a few weeks too. If you're taking a taxi in to the city centre, on a nice day you might consider going around the bays rather than the usual route through the Mt Victoria tunnel. Pretty scenic and doesn't take much longer. It'd cost a wee bit more, but I'm guessing the difference wouldn't be very much.

this is an excellent idea, I also recommend. Simply ask the driver to go 'round the bays' instead of through mt vic tunnel - they should understand what that means.

If getting an Uber pickup from airport they have a designated area in the carpark, follow instructions in app but basically exit terminal and walk straight through carpark asif trying to get to the golf course that neighbours the airport.

in terms of the J flight, I did it about 3 weeks ago.
lounge - nice enough. Has shower if necessary. plenty of space
seat - 737-800 so a recliner. nice enough but not a true J seat
service - great, very attentive, fast to get meals out and they policed (a number of times!) Y pax from using the J toilet! Impressive.

I usually take the super shuttles. A few bucks cheaper and almost always as fast (though a slight risk you get unlucky and are the last of 3 or 4 drop-offs, and add maybe 10 minutes to the journey). And they go via the bay.

JetConnect crews are the best at enforcing the J exclusivity. Mainline QF rarely does these days.

Lounge is adequate but not worth spending anything more than bare minimum time in.

My recent WLG departures have been on SQ so I’m not sure the QF times anymore. But note that the WLG international section of the terminal is not always open. It will be shut at times in the middle of the day if there are no flights, so another reason for leaving your arrival at the airport to the latest possible time you feel comfortable with.

I’m presuming you’re talking about Qantas. Yes they still do Kapiti ice cream but the lounge is nothing special IMHO. It’s only open before the flights and as others said closed for a chunk of the day. I have found security very quick and efficient in WLG as they have people helping you get through and sort out the newbie travellers with the liquids and wine

Does Welly airport still give out cards on the security dogs? I recall being given one but that was about 2yrs ago, at immigration I think.

I’ve been through that airport about 8 times this year and didn’t see the cards

I was through WLG this morning and can confirm the cards are still there, on a table on the left as you leave security.
