hey folks
Love my red wines, hate brand snobs, im looking for a few recommendations for whats out there for the best shiraz/cab under $200,

for the record, I love the deep bold bordeauxs from france, I dont like them to acidic as Ifeel it cheapens the taste and like the richness that only comes with quality reds (shiraz/cab) dont like light reds, taste cheap to me
I think in terms of value aus wines are better,
however I am not a the more expensive the better type person,
think grange is stupidly overrated and not that great
I tried (cant rememebr vintage ) chateau margaux and it was one of the best ive had (however its not under $200)

if you are looking for the best based on taste, what do you guys recommend

I am a big fan of most of the rockfords, yalumba signature, bannockburn shiraz

I'll give you three I like under $200 as taste is completely subjective.

  1. Rolf Binder Hanisch
  2. Hently Farm Clos Otto
  3. Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon

Not a brand snob, yet acid in a wine or a lighter reds as they're cheap. Well, stay well clear of Grand Cru red burgundy then :) That $2k DRC is going to be "cheap" to your tastes :)

Ok, more seriously, bang for your buck, you can't go past Metala White Label Shiraz Cabernet.

Reading between the lines of your likes and dislikes, I suspect you prefer your big reds with a bit of age. Ie once the acid has softened. Otherwise, anything young that's big like you describe is just going to be an over-ripe fruit bomb, unless that's your thing.

It's a hard question to answer, but If you like Bordeaux the closest facsimile from Australia would be Yarra Valley (or maybe Margaret River).

My recommendations:
1. Mt Mary Quintet
2. Yarra Yering Dry Red (No. 1 or 2)
3. Yeringberg Cabernets

Also worth trying (from Margaret River):
1. Woodlands top level Cabernet (name changes)
2. Cullen Diana Madeline
3. Mosswood Cabernet (dropped off IMO but indisputably a contender)
4. Vasse Felix Tom Cullity

None of these is cheap though, and all have strong brands, so they are hardly undiscovered gems.

For shiraz, south australia

Kay brothers block 6 and Amery Vineyards Hillside Shiraz
Standish wines(all)
Sami Odi(all)
Head wines, brunette , blonde , redhead shiraz.

Here's some hunter shiraz, this region is known as high acidity but alot of them nowadays are more balance and less noticeable.

Mount pleasant rosehill, op&oh. The 4 single vineyard 1921,1880,1946 and 1965 shiraz only made in good vintages(2013,2014,2017).

Meerea park alexander munro shiraz , the only shiraz from the winery release 5(or more) years after its been harvested.

For cabs. the only one i really buy constantly

Wynns black label and john riddoch.
Blue poles reserve cab franc and merlot(both straight)

since you asked for under $200, i won't name other cheaper options. Most of the wines i mentioned here are over $45rrp.

Agree with the above 2 posts, if you want a Shiraz made in an Italian style, look for Koltz "The Pagan", from Blewitt Springs in S.A.
