I had an ‘oh cough’ moment yesterday for an upcoming flight PEK-HKG-MEL. Details are PEK-HKG flying CX and arriving HKG at around 14:00, HKG-MEL flying QF30, departure around 20:00. Flights are on separate PNRs. As they are seperate PNRs will OW rules apply. Also I have HLO.

If I check-in with QF the night before in the hotel and can (hopefully) print the BP will this be sufficient to get me through the transfer security in HKG or can check in and pick up a boarding pass at the service desk in HKG. The ‘oh cough’ moment was the thought I may get sent landside and have to wait 3 hours for QF check in to open.

It may seem like a basic question but in all my years of travel I can not recall ever taking a trip that involved a same day transfer using different carriers on seperate PNRs.

I don't know if it's still the case, but HKG transfer security used not to accept QF self-printed BPs.
Easy enough to call by the QF transfer desk though.

I went through HKG transit security 2 months ago with a mobile BP OK. It wasn't for QF (I was EK to CX on separate PNRs) but I doubt it mattered. They scanned my phone.

CX will check across PNRs to other oneworld carriers.
They stopped doing it when the rule change happened, then changed back a few months later.

Just tell the CX agent at PEK that you're connecting to MEL on QF.

You should be able to use transfer desk but worse case scenario is you'll need to go landside and you can print boarding pass in check in aisle D.

I did similar turning up to HKG lounge crawl early but can't find my post.

As @Himeno posted, CX should check you through at PVG.

Qantas have an active transfer desk at the arrivals level before customs/immigration but I'm not certain of its opening hours.

Failing any of that, you can jump on the Airport express to Kowloon and use ITCI (HKD100 Day return IIRC). That would take no more than an hour.

I sent a message to SST today and was advised that the QF service/ transfer opens at 8am. All sorted.

Have transferred ex QF97 BNE/HKG to CX888 to YVR on separate pnrs HLO. We had both done a phone checkin for CX but for some reason SO couldn't retrieve the QR code on his phone when we got to transit security.

We also had an OLCI b/pass however you can't show that on your phone as OLCI b/passes must be printed. We had to detour to the nearest transfer desk to get a bit of cardboard before proceeding to transit security again.
