I hope it was a cheap blend and not an expensive single malt. The latter case would have been very hard to bear.

Lets just say..... It was VERY hard to bare. Her friends had travelled to the distillery themselves recently, and had picked up a bottle of a limited run item.
 
At least the leak in your luggage was perfume and not some liquid coal tar product! :(

What such product would one be carrying in checked luggage (unless a geologist or similar ilk)?
Some might suggest a certain savoury spread often served on toast?? But personally I would find that aroma less offensive than some so-called perfumes.
 
I had a bottle of Vera Wang for Men leak in my suitcase. Thankfully not enough to make everything reek, but to infuse a nice smell! Case smelt great for a good couple of years.
