Well there’s freedom and then there is breaking the law. Getting drunk in public is breaking the law. Everywhere. If the authorities want to exercise it.
Define drunk? 1drink? 2 drinks? I can have a drink in public in Thailand and it's not against the law. I think it's the same in SE Asia and most places in Europe. But most importantly I can easily purchase alcohol if I want.

And nothing is different from that in Dubai. Define Public? We cant drink alcohol in many public places in Australia.

By public I mean street, malls etc. Australia is relatively strict but all a pub has to do is stick some barriers on the sidewalk and people can drink there.

You might not appreciate Norway, then.
So be it. No plans to visit Norway other than a short transit or as part of a tour of Scandinavia.

Actually not true. Licensed premises have very strict rules with regards to where their premises extend and how many patrons can be fitted in, and even the number of seats. Currently there is a prosecution in SA for a pub that provided 2 extra seats. I can’t help but feel you aren’t really on top of current laws in Australia; or are throwing darts at possible ideas, or are simply stirring me up. Maybe they do it differently in Thailand but you simply cannot do as you suggest here and Dubai is no different. And that’s all I’m going to say.

I think you've nailed it in there.

One of the glories of travelling to new and different parts of the world is that stereotypes get punctured. As some-one posted up-thread, buying booze in 'liberal' Norway is pretty difficult, and impossible from noon on Saturday until Monday IIRC. You can get 'real' bacon in Dubai hotels. Iran is a wonderfully hospitable country to visit. I had a boozy night out in Saudi Arabia once. Italy's not uniformly chaotic, and so on.

OK, I lied on that last one, but while not liking a place is entirely up to the individual, basing it on ignorance of what really goes on shows the weakness.

All I can think is that there are many places with strange (by our standards) laws and customs. Some of those places not following those laws and customs is likely to get you an eye roll and knowing that the other person is thinking "stupid westerners", right through to the death penalty (either officially or due to blind eye's).

To me part of what makes traveling so wonderful is the stepping out of my comfort zone. I try to verse myself on the local laws and customs of where ever I'm visiting, if nothing else so I don't make an cough of myself.

Finally if all I wanted to do was sit around and drink a beer whenever I felt like it, I would go down to the local pub, not half way around the world.

Not stirring and definitely not making anything up. Walk past the pub at Tugun and people are drinking on the sidewalk. Go past many night clubs in Sydney city and drinking areas are open areas just off the sidewalk. Same in Brisbane. Strict but not that strict.

The Mormon state of Utah has some of the most restrictive alcohol laws in the USA. However one only needs to “join” a “private club” and it’s then freely available.
That happens in a lot of places in the USA-the"dry"counties.

We have had that happen in Arkansas and Tennessee.

Our son lived for 2 years in Philly early this century.Spirits were banned and other alcohol sold in government stores. So nearly every weekend a short trip to Delaware to pick up their beer, wine and spirits was the usual routine for Uni students.helped that Delaware was tax free.
laws were liberalised a bit in PA in 2017.

Probably "turning a blind eye" - sort of what generally happens in much of the UAE.
In Australia? We were quite strict with alcohol and gambling but the poker machine lobby has a strong voice so now pubs are all smoking again in the poker machine area but the rest of the place stinks of smoke as doors are opened constantly.

Pray tell me where the legislation allows it? It’s only allowed in outdoor gaming areas ie ones that don’t meet definition of enclosed.

Some info

But no smoking in enclosed areas
Outdoor areas cannot be smoking if a certain distance to dining areas

But it’s true the smoke does not stay in a smoking area but can waft into non smoking area

Pokies areas can be smoking if it’s in a non enclosed area. But generally pokies area are non smoking

I don't look at legislation. I spend many hours playing pokies in lots of places and I've seen the restrictions relaxed. Either that or all these pubs and clubs have gone against legislation?

Seriously, what a load of cr_p!

A "single glass of wine with dinner"? Yet she still managed to blow 0.04 over 4 hours after the flight landed, so probably at least 6 or 8 hours after any meal service. Her BAC (blood-alcohol content) would go down about 0.02 per hour, so upon disembarking (taking the minimum 5 hours from her version) she would have been merrily arguing over her non-valid visa with a BAC at least 0.14 - that takes about 7 standard drinks, and even that is assuming she drank these immediately prior to de-planing (not "with dinner")

Yes, we are all arm-chair warriors and all that, but the story just does not add up. IMHO she was pissed and aggressive and even risked (and managed) to get her little daughter into a horrendous situation because of her actions.

I've often felt that these days travel is now much more easier to do, but also much more easier to get wrong.
I also miss being able to call up my TA if I needed help or something changed while I was travelling. These days, you're at the mercy of the airlines help desks, and as pax, you seem to get a lot less help than a TA. Or at least, when I use a TA, they seem to achieve things I myself cannot.

The trains have women and children-only carriages, where men get fined if they are in them.
Have you ever been a woman without a man in a ME country? Until you have been harassed, stared at, groped, chased down alleys, don't complain about the things put in place to protect women. Every single bus trip I took in Turkey (not even really in the ME), I had some horrible man try to grope me or just touch me, or my hair between the seats. I started to ask to be seated with the women and children too!
