100K QFF, Bronze.

Hi all, I'm a real newbie here and I hope I'm posting it in the right place

I currently have 100K QFF points, I probably will have about 110-120 by this time next year.

I am on Bronze status, I fly maybe four flights a year total , so statusing up is unlikely to ever happen. (MEL-LAX, maybe one or two domestic round trips.)
. I've accrued 100K points over the last eight or so years of flying, and I'd like to see if I can upgrade on points to PE on QF96 on the dates 15th-24th July next year (these are the core dates)

I know I need to buy a flexible ticket, so I need a Saver or a Flex Fare.

Currently Saver fares are (at time of posting) 2K return. is this price likely to come down at all or are saver and flex buckets usually fixed?

The Saver and Flex fares are rarely on sale - whenever there is a sale it is usually in the Sale bucket which is non-upgradeable. That said, if you're travelling next July it wouldn't hurt to wait another month or two in case the price does drop. 11-12 months out is rarely the cheapest time to book.

The upgrade lottery for QF international flights is frustrating.

My recommendation - use 96K to outright purchase a one way business class award (or use less points for an outright PE award).

Use the rest of the money you would have spent on a flex airfare for a one way paid ticket in the other direction. Using Jetstar via Honolulu might make this a relatively inexpensive proposition (use you choice of airline to connect from HNL to the USA, although with separate tickets you should allow for plenty of connecting time to allow for delays).

I’d buy a JQ J flight to HNL (which is kind of like PE anyway) and then use points to LAX (or pay). As others have said, you won’t get a sale on the fare classes you’ll need. Alternatively, save your points a bit longer and fly J to Asia on points at a later date and treat yourself. Enjoy your travels.

Hi Xax,

in my opinion the "sweet spot" with QF international fares is to buy with cash their PE sales fares - these are very good value when they come around (very frequently these days), and are also an upgradeable fare. So you can try for J - even though that is hard for bronze.

In terms of chances of upgrade in a peak time like July for a Bronze to LAX well... it's possible, but not probable. I certainly would not bank on it happening as a given tbh.

There's certainly no way to know 11 or so months out. You'd only get any kind of indication a few days prior to the flight, and even then availability can change very quickly.
