Skytrax 2018 Awards

While it's odd that these awards are announced when we're not much more than halfway through the calendar year, Singapore Airlines deservedly won.

In my view, Qantas doesn't deserve to be in the top 10. Its ranking of 11th seems very generous.

The most surprising omission from the 'top 10' would have to be Japan Airlines. A quality company that provides terrific service. Renowned for great onboard attention, caring staff, eight-across in B789s not the nine that all competitors have...the list goes on.

I will be flying JAL this coming November to Tokyo so quite interested to see how their service matches up against the top 5 in that list.

I think everyone has different thoughts/experiences on what they consider best airlines. Personally I’ve found our last 3 experiences on SQ very underwhelming whilst WY and CI have been outstanding in my experience.
We are off to Europe next Friday with EK so hoping they haven’t dropped off as much as some people say they have
The awards do seem like a bit of a popularity contest

Skytrax is nothing more than a popularity context - Awards Methodology | SKYTRAX

Out of interest, have your flown these airlines recently, or are you making subjective observations not based on actual experience?

Popularity contest - that's OK.. For me, if I have a good experience with the airline (price/quality/schedule etc), then it will be popular with me ! :)

Looking at the various categories for business, cabin, IFE etc and top overall, it seems about right. A few anomalies, but if you were guided by this list you wouldn't go too far wrong. And yes, I have flown most in the top 10-15 in the past 18 months :) (Most obviously, not Eva, All Nippon or Garuda - but obviously I should! )

If it was just a 'popularity contest', I don't see how TG would win 'best economy class' as (at least in Australia) has long been a low profile full service airline, unlike its glory days that were perhaps the 1970s and maybe early 1980s.

How is it not a popularity contest, it is a survey sent out to the consumer. I am not sure what TG's popularity in Australia has to do with anything considering that Skytrax is international.

As per my other comment, are you basing your comments about airline rankings subjectively with or without flying them within the last 12 months?

All my comments are objective. Two out of three flown in last 12 months. The third not, but planning underway, but have flown previously and never had a problem.

TG is pretty low profile internationally as well. You didn't correctly read my post. The site has negative, neutral and positive reviews of airlines contributed by passengers. So if reviewers receive an email asking them to contribute, or see the survey open on the Skytrax site, one can't draw the conclusion that everyone who fills out the survey will give a 'top' ranking just to teh airlines they've reviewed. It may be that for some flights, people don't bother to submit a review, but still remember at survey time that they had a top experience and hence give that airline top billing in the survey.

Why Qantas is getting worse and the Asian carriers are winning

As an aside, the value of this survey is reflected in the fact that QF has the best first class in the Asia Pacific (beating SG) but SG beats it for the best first class in the world. That does not compute.

Agree, but from memory, these are separate questions in the survey. Not everyone may have answered each question, so that may explain it. But yes, counterintuitive.

I contacted Skytrax a few years ago to ask why the Japanese carriers never seemed (at the time) to feature in any of the top places and suggested that the survey was mainly answered by Anglos. I received an answer that defended the survey and claimed that Japanese were among the ethnicities who contributed many of the X million claimed responses.

From my experience in First (and I’ve flown in a few airlines, including Singapore) I would pick Emirates as no.1. Excellent service, including the availability of a shower and luxury transfers at each end of the journey (Business travelers too) seal it for me.

As per my other comment, are you basing your comments about airline rankings subjectively with or without flying them within the last 12 months?
Surely the whole process is subjective. Not like there are pax running around with density meters checking seat pad comfort, or taking sample of aircraft carpets to see what can be found under a microscope. Isn't it all based on that more old reliable method; the whaddya think methodology?

As with previous years to be taken with grain of salt.

Any survey/awards which have EK anywhere near the top of the rankings cannot be taken seriously....

In other news:

- Human beings prove indecisive and inconsistent during survey taking.
- Survey and ratings agencies accused of bias when ranking companies that directly or indirectly support them.
- Scientists confirm large sample sizes yield more authentic results. (unless subsequently distorted by ‘commercial factors’) as per above.

So, yeah, grain of salt and all that...
