Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Also on Thursday 19 July, QF484 (B738 VH-VXU, the 1915 hours MEL - SYD that took off at 2053) is arriving at 2203, 83 late.

QF19 (1210 hours SYD - MNL) departed 27 late, arriving 35 late at 1905. The SYD - BKK '23' was similar, arriving 34 late, a bit less than the delay expected this morning.

...UPDATE: QF2 was airborne at 0921 hours. QF has yet to update the previous estimate of 0355 hours as SIN arrival but going on recent flight times it will be at around 0500, meaning likely SYD arrival tomorrow afternoon at post-1600 hours.....

This delayed flight arrived SIN at 0505 hours on Friday 20 July. I'm unsure why the QF software was so inaccurate, because it did not match what was achievable with its suggestion that arrival would be at 0355 hours.

Departure from SIN is expected at 0640 meaning QF2D (A388 VH-OQF) SYD arrival this afternoon at 1625 instead of teh scheduled 0510 hours.

...With A388 in DXB for maintenance, it appears QF is one short for timely four A388 departures tomorrow (Friday 20 July) but QF127 may be reduced to a B744 (if available) or A333/332....

Due to the late QF2 that is arriving at around 1625 on Friday 20 July, QF1, the 1555 hours SYD - SIN - LHR will depart at an expected 1815 hours (140 late). This means a SIN stop from 0040 to 0205 - rather optimistic as most flights seem to take longer - and LHR arrival on Saturday 21 at 0910 hours, 135 minutes late.

Interesting that QF127/128 has not been 'downgauged' from an A388 but this may reflect (among other considerations) too many passengers booked or simply that a B744, for instance, is unavailable.

Also on Friday, QF73, the 1245 hours SYD - SFO B744 is delayed in its departure until 1655 hours meaning SFO arrival at an estimated 1255, 230 minutes late. It is to be formed by the arriving QF64 from JNB that is expected to be at its SYD gate at 1433 this afternoon, 22 minutes ahead of schedule.

Friday 20 July's QF612 (B738 VH-VZM, the 1010 hours MEL up to BNE that was not in the sky until 1108 hours) should arrive at roughly 1308 hours, 48 late.

QF37, the afternoon MEL to SIN that should push back at 1615 has a good timekeeping record but on 20 July is not expected to do so until 1945 with arrival at 01409 on Saturday 21.

The 1210 hours SYD - MNL, QF19 (A332 VH-EBN) did not take off until 1303 so arrival is suggested as 1911, 41 late. This will delay the redeye QF20 back down to SYD.

SYD down to 1 runway again? Apparently Qantas has to cancel some flights.

JohnK, the ever reliable AviatorInsight posted this (and more) on the VA thread:

thanks to those howling westerly winds prevailing runway 25 for most of the day.

JohnK, looking post-1500 hours this afternoon, QF2046, the 1515 hours SYD to DBO departed at 1556 but did not arrive until 1718, 63 minutes late. QF2030, the 1540 hours SYD up to ARM departed 49 late, arriving at 1731, 31 late.

QF445, 1530 hours SYD down to MEL was cancelled, as was QF449, the 1630 hours. The 1700 hours southbound (QF453 is better, having pushed back 36 minutes late with MEL arrival likely at around the 1910 hours mark, 35 late. The 1715, QF451 should depart an hour late. QF455, the 1730 is suggested as departing 55 minutes behind schedule. The 1745 hours (QF457) has been given the boot. The 1800 hours (QF459) should be 40 late away. QF477, the 1815 hours is not operating. The 1830 hours (QF463) has been cancelled. QF465 (the 1900 hours) is delayed ex SYD by a claimed half an hour.

QF493, the 1915 hours SYD - MEL is one of the worst hit as its changed time off blocks is 2120. This may be because it is being formed by a late arrival. Qf487, the 2000 hours is estimated to push back 90 minutes behind schedule.

QF536, the 1600 hours SYD - BNE commenced pushing back at 1641, with estimated arrival at 1827, 57 minutes tardy.

The 1615 hours SYD down to MEL QF469 was 34 late away with arrival estimated as 1822, 32 late.

The 1635 hours to PER (QF569) departed SYD 40 late so arrival is anticipated at 2025 this evening, 45 minutes tardy. The later QF583, the 1945 hours ex SYD is not predicted to depart for PER until 2130 tonight.

QF540 (1700 hours SYD - BNE) is estimated to depart at 1755 hours. QF542, the 1730 should be 50 late away. QF544, the 1800 hours northbound up to BNE is cancelled ex SYD. QF546, the 1830 hours is estimated to be off its blocks 50 minutes late.

The 1830 hours from SYD across to ADL, QF743 should depart 40 minutes behind schedule. QF2178, the identically timed departure ex SYD up to PQQ is the same.

QF864, the scheduled 1850 hours SYD - OOL is suggested as pushing back 45 late tonight. The later QF868, the timetabled 2050 ex SYD is estimated to depart at 2225. I wouldn't be surprised if it was cancelled.

QF2008, the 1905 hours SYD up to TMW has been given an unusual revised departure at 2024 tonight.

QF930 (1950 hours SYD up to CNS) should push back at 2125 meaning likely arrival at 0040 on Saturday 21 July or later rather than the timetabled 2300 hours on Friday night.

The 2050 hours from SYD up to distant DRW, QF846 should be away at 2200 with arrival on Saturday at about 0140, 40 late.

While the NSWTrainLink XPTs are often busy on Friday nights between SYD and MEL (each way), all seats and the limited number of sleeping berths are sold out tonight.

There will be many forced to stay in SYD, MEL or BNE (and perhaps other capitals) tonight. Friday afternoon/ night must be the worst time for SYD to have been restricted to one runway.

In further delays on a very windy Friday 20 July in SYD, QF73, the 1245 hours to SFO was more delayed than predicted but was off blocks at 1730 late this afternoon. Same day arrival should be at 1334 hours, 269 minutes late.

QF7 from SYD to DFW earlier pushed back 25 minutes tardy at 1300 with arrival suggested as half an hour late at 1330 on Friday.

Flagship QF1, the 1555 hours out of SYD is estimated to commence its long journey to SIN and LHR at 1850 tonight. LHR arrival is predicted, at this early stage, to be 0900 hours, 135 late.

Northbound QF452, the 17090 MEL up to SYD that took off at 1748 (A332 VH-EBA) remained in a hold above Gunning at 1845 so its chance of arriving at the estimated time of 1908 hours (43 late) may be slim. QF450 (B738 VH-VZL) is well ahead of it, with this scheduled 1630 ex MEL having become airborne at 1728, experiencing a holding pattern near Marulan and looking set to arrive at roughly 1857, 62 minutes tardy.

The WGA - SYD QF2230 (Q300 VH-SBG) is arriving an hour late at 1855 hours.

QF632, the 1810 hours MEL up to BNE that was in the sky at 1855 with B738 VH-VYB should arrive at 2050 hours, half an hour tardy.

In further delays on a very windy Friday 20 July in SYD,..Flagship QF1, the 1555 hours out of SYD is estimated to commence its long journey to SIN and LHR at 1850 tonight. LHR arrival is predicted, at this early stage, to be 0900 hours, 135 late....

For once on a day with delays, this flight beat the forecast, managing to commence push back at 1841 hours. The SIN stop is expected from 0017 to 0220 hours on Saturday 21 July and LHR arrival at 0900 hours, 125 minutes late. A388 VH-OQF is the aircraft.

In further on a windy SYD Friday 20 July 2018, QF580 from PER to SYD - unusually A333 VH-QPD - is arriving at about 2115 hours, 160 late. The north-south runways have reopened. and winds are now not severe, unlike at 1800 hours when there were gusts of up to 76kmh (and earlier, at 1400 hours, 78kmh recorded).

QF479 (1945 hours SYD down to MEL, one of the few operating tonight) was still in then queue at 2126 hours, so arrival should be at about 2255 compared with the timetable of 2120.

The 1615 hours MEL - SIN, QF37, departed at 1956, a tad later than predicted with arrival suggested as 0125 hours on Saturday 21, three hours late and conversely a wee bit earloier than had been forecast.

Still on much delayed SYD-airport wise Friday 20 July, QF583, the 1945 hours SYD across to PER took off to the north at 2239 hours.

QF930, the 1950 hours SYD- CNS took off at about 2257, just sneaking out before curfew.

The 2000 hours SYD - MEL QF487 (VH-XZP) took off at 2259 or so.

Some of these delays will mean late flights, or cancellations due to aircraft being out of position, on Saturday 21 July.

On Saturday 21 July 2018, QF419, the 0900 hours SYD down to MEL has been cancelled.

The 1025 hours SYD - PER, QF581, is expected to depart 70 minutes late. I assume this is because the Friday 20 evening departures across the continent were so badly late.

QF420 on Saturday 21, the 0930 hours MEL up to SYD is worse with push back expected to be two hours late, again probably due to a late arrival ex PER overnight.

QF408 (Saturday 21 July 2018, the 0700 hours MEL - SYD unusually with A333 VH-QPD) took off at 0923 and is arriving at a suggsted 1032 hours, 127 minutes behind schedule. This A333 had arrived in MEL on QF648 ex PER at 0745, 145 minutes late, and prior to that did SYD - PER - SYD - PER, all of which were two hours late due to the strong winds yesterday in Sydney that saw only runway 25 in use.

There will be reasons for this A333 being used on domestic flights but at face value given so many QFi flights have the A332s, one would think that it ought be rostered to and fromm southeast or northeast Asia and rarely if ever be seen on domestic Australian routes.

QF2078, the 0850 hours MEL to MQL has Q400 VH-LQQ and was airborne at 0942. Arrival has been delayed until a suggested 1040, 40 late.

In further on Saturday 21 July, QF118 from HKG down to SYD has A332 VH-EBS and should arrive at 1200 'high noon', 70 late.

Earlier, QF128 from HKG down to SYD arrived 57 late at 0752 hours. QF2 was 49 late in arriving SYD at 0559.

QF79, the 0910 hours morning MEL - NRT is expected to depart at 1050 with arrival at 2020 tonight, 105 late, delaying either the southbound QF62 down to BNE or QF80 to MEL.

The 0935 hours SYD - LAX is predicted to depart at 1020.

QF81 from SYD up to SIN, the 1015 hours should depart at 1150. QF19 from SYD to MNL is similar, with its 1210 hours push back delayed until a predicted 1345 this afternoon.

Continuing with Saturday 21 July, QF63 (1055 hours SYD across to JNB) has been delayed until beyond 1210 hours in its departure, meaning QF64 back overnight to SYD will be late.

'The 79' departed MEL at 1047, 97 minutes behind schedule with A333 VH-QPG. Anticipated NRT arrival is 1947, 72 late.

UPDATE: QF63 pushed back in SYD at 1218 hours. JNB arrival is estimated at 1755, 55 late.

Friday night's QF1 was in SIN on Saturday 21 July from 0028 to 0224 with LHR arrival suggested as 0835, 100 minutes behind the schedule.

QF19 departed SYD at 1355 hours, 105 late for MNL on Saturday 21 July.

The 1015 hours SYD - SIN, QF81, pushed back at 1226 with arrival suggested as 1815 tonight, 85 late.

QF73 is not as badly late as was the case yesterday, but today it left 62 minutes behind at 1347 for an arrival same day at 0954, 49 late.

In further on Saturday 21 July,....QF79, the 0910 hours morning MEL - NRT is expected to depart at 1050 with arrival at 2020 tonight, 105 late, delaying either the southbound QF62 down to BNE or QF80 to MEL...

QF62 is being advised as departing NRT 65 late at 2100 tonight.

Sunday 22 July 2018 sees QF30 (A333 VH-QPF) from HKG to MEL arriving at a suggested 0835, an hour late.

A388 VH-OQL on QF127, the 1035 hours SYD up to HKG departed an hour late, taking off at 1159. Arrival should be at 1830, half an hour late.

Battling headwinds, QF771, the 0805 hours morning MEL - PER that took off at 0843 (about 25 - 30 minutes late) should be arriving with B738 VH-VZY at 1104, 49 late.

In further on 22 July, QF27, the 1235 hours long flight from SYD to SCL is expected to depart shortly, an hour late at 1335, meaning same day arrival at 1150, 40 late.

UPDATE: The flight took off with B744 VH-OEG at 1400 hours, making expected SC:L arrival 1223, 73 late.

QF117 is predicted to depart at 1530 mid afternoon, 70 minutes tardy.

UPDATE: QF117 departed at 1529, and was formed by A332 VH-EBG, straight off the arriving QF108 from PEK that was at its SYD gate today at 1316, four minutes early.

If VH-EBG has to be turned around like this it shows QF has a shortage of A332s/A333s.

QF37 (1615 hours MEL - SIN) is predicted to depart at 2005 (230 late), arriving on Monday 23 at 0220 hours, 235 late. QF38 should push back in SIN according to QF at 0325 (a little optimistic to suggest a 65 minute turnaround), arriving on Monday 23 in MEL at 1255 hours, 220 late.

As discussed previously, it is arguable that these aircraft are being worked too hard. The number of delays they incur that are not due to adverse weather is large.

Also on Sunday 22, QF64 from JNB arrived SYD at 1530, 35 late.
