Onboard Greetings

I received a greeting from the flight attending managing "the rear cabin" on a recent wideoby transcon. First time in a long time. The FA was using the manifest and greeted me and, presumably other WPs, by name. There was no offer of anything just a simple 'Welcome back. Thanks for flying with us'.

On an EK flight (AKL-SYD) I was welcomed at my seat by the staff member, this was in F so everyone got a 'welcome'. Obviously my QF status appeared on their manifest so they said, "Welcome back Mr. 340". It was my first EK flight.

Talking about greetings this reminds me of a FA at the gate who when I was walking down the priority line they uttered something along the lines of the general boarding lane is on the other side (indicating towards the other lane) I just replied with a thanks and continued toward them, this was just as the flight was called and I was the first person at the gate even if I wasn't entitled to PB it would have made no difference as no one else was there yet, It kind of left me a little shocked that without any checking they judged a book by its cover and didn't expect someone my age to have status or to be flying in a premium cabin. This was at CNS mid Jan this year.

Have had same experience PB/check-in a handful of times as well, perhaps more customer service training needs to be doled out. You know what they say about assuming...

I think i’m in my third year of WP with VA (two consecutively, the other a couple of years ago, and have been SG in between for a number of years) and cannot remember ever getting a personal greeting on a domestic leg when in economy.

I reached WP in April and last weekend I received onboard greetings between Australia & Auckland before takeoff - both on a 'Jetconnect' 737 on the way out and mainline Qantas A330 on the way back. On the way over, the lines to the economy bathrooms (on the 737) were long and when I stood up for a moment (to stretch) the CSM came to me and offered me to use the business class bathroom at the front - whilst turning almost everyone else away. Nice touch. I also was offered business class headphones but declined because I had my own.

QF9 and QF10. Got the onboard greeting both ways but not by the CSM. Just by a crew member who was in the Y cabin.

AY HEL > LHR in J.
"Good morning Mr xx_X, Thank you for flying with us. As our top tier Emerald member (QFF), I would like to take your lunch order before it is offered to the others".

Fantastic crew on that flight, whereas the AY flight HKG > HEL with the local HKG crew is only so so.

On a KA (Cathay Dragon) flight between Hong Kong and Xiamen last week I got a greeting as QF WP. One attendant came up to me before take off and said,' Mr Sundich, it's a pleasure to have you on board'. She gave me my China arrival card ahead of anyone else and a bottle of water then told me to let her know if there was anything more she could get me. I was literally the only Westerner on board (except the first officer) so no one raised an eyebrow.

Domestically in Y, the only thing I get as a WP is when they do the meal service, they address me by name. In about a dozen plus sectors, that's the extent of it.

Qantas (and others) may try to keep a profile on frequent flyers, but my personal nirvana has never been met.

The day I get greeted with "Hey Juddles, great to have you back, how many champas can I instantly pour you?" then I will finally bask in glory.

As a silver I only get greeted when I get points upgrades to Business on long haul.
It is still a novelty to me so I like it.
On my last QF1 LHR-SYD he knew about my other Oneworld flights in Europe and that my flight over was cancelled and chatted about that.
The most special treatment I ever got was on a flight to China in Business when I was offered some rice stuff as a snack and I said "Is there anything else I have to eat rice for the next 2 weeks over here". She went and made me vegemite sandwich.

Personally i really like the greeting. Its sad that QF stopped doing it on domestic. I only got it once or twice with a bottle of water before take off.
For me they are sometimes great DYKWIA moments. QF internationally seem to do it for WP's & above. I dont think SG's get it. I do agree sometimes i can be inconvenient as i have to take my headphones off and pause whatever i was watching. But i still like / prefer it.

On QF in Y or Y+ when i get the greeting its usually the CSM i believe (person in charge of the other FA's) along with whoever is looking after that section. Recently in Y+ the guy next to me thought he is also going to get a greeting and chat. He looked a little confused when the CSM walked away after talking to me. Although sometimes the CSM will greet everyone in Y+ and just have a little extra chat to the WP's & above, depends on loading i guess. The CSM was chatting to my seat make & I in Y+ a few years ago. He haded out the immigration cards to us and then proceeded to pull out a express card and hand that to me.
In Y on occasion ive had good attention. The CSM has sometimes offered to bring me J headphones, J drinks and checked if i needed anything.
Ive mentioned this before but I was waiting for the loo down the back of the bus and the CSM had walked past a few times and had obviously seen me. He came up and said "I think the F loos are free. Just go through the curtain and tell them i sent you". It was a nice touch and experience.

CX as mentioned by others do it more consistently than others as in specific crew members are required to greet you it seems. I have appreciated the bottle of water CX give to status pax with the greeting. Got on a boiling hot plane once and a nice cold bottle of water before takeoff was appreciated. When i was on a tour group ticket sitting at the very back of Y it was great to get greeted and i had my meal order taken before takeoff to ensure i got it.
My best CX story was in KIX I saw the F class checkin area (which is great they provide this in ports i assume dont have F) and went towards it. An agent came out to screen pax who would try and go into that area (the F checkin agents were all free while the J priority queue was full up). I flashed my QF WP card and was welcomed in. They asked me if i was travelling alone and i said i was travelling with my family (for logistics reasons and since bookings were split each of us was checking in separately). The agent said they cam also come over. I said OK and 13 other people came over out of the J line. The agent was probably not expecting that. All checked in and bags tagged with F priority.

Had a greeting as a QF SG in Y on QF29 a couple of weeks back. Wasn't expecting it at all. Was totally engrossed in a movie and the CSM gave me a little poke on the shoulder and welcomed me on board.

Interesting flight on QF2 SIN-SYD last night.

After take-off CSM came and stood in front of me to welcome 32K in upper deck economy. Conversation lasted maybe 30 seconds. She then looked at her list and greeted 32G and that conversation lasted 3-4 minutes, perhaps a little more.

Totally ignored me. I did have the headphones on but that shouldn't be an excuse. It just felt like she had no interest in greeting me. Oh well.

Hence:
Is your life movie material?

On PR a couple of times in J the purser and "my" attendant repeated my name in a few conversations. But then Filipinos working in such roles have terrific English and never appear to struggle with Australian accents, unlike most other Asian carriers (SQ being next best).

On JL, one staff member tried to address me by name but couldn't pronounce it well. Koala points for trying though (I'm not too hot at pronouncing Japanese words).

On EK - never - the other extreme. Never domestically in Oz on any of the four majors even when in J on VA or QF.

My greeting at the QF gate today was a little different.

“Welcome and thank you for your contribution to our profit.”

The NB Y pax in the PB lane ahead of me  didn’t get this greeting.

I resisted the urge to suggest some of the profit be spent on tidying up the PB fiasco.

Given Qantas loyalty generated more profit than the entire jetstar operation, I'm surprised they're not thanking FFers. Especially the non-status ones thast must be redeeming an awful lot of toasters to generate those sorts of profits.

Had greetings on last 2 international flights.

On first flight offered exit row seat but chose to remain with wife and daughter. Should have taken the offer to allow wife and daughter some extra room and relief from serial recliner in front. CSM came round a few times to check things and also came round towards end of flight for another chat.

Second flight offered a full row for wife and daughter and as it turns they had 3 seats anyway. CSM checked if everything ok a few times throughout flight.
