I couldn’t find the thread for previous discussion on this (mods pls merge thread if there’s one).

Qantas has announced a shortlist of 9 regional cities for the pilot training academy, having received around 60 expressions of interest. The 9 are:
  • Alice Springs, Northern Territory
  • Bendigo, Victoria
  • Busselton, Western Australia
  • Dubbo, New South Wales
  • Launceston, Tasmania
  • Mackay, Queensland
  • Tamworth, New South Wales
  • Toowoomba, Queensland
  • Wagga Wagga, New South Wales
A final decision on the location is expected later this year.

So, have a look at them all on the satellite views. Then do a search for info about them on the net.
How many do you end up with?

I get maybe a maximum of 3? In this day and age of HR and PR BS I just don’t know how seriously to take this project.....

I would say Dubbo or Tamworth. Maybe not 3 after all. The prerequisites (like needing an ILS for example) cancel others out. Dubbo doesn’t have an ILS but Tamworth does. However there is a rumour that Oxford is setting up a school there for international students so that could remove its viability also. Tasmania tends to have poor whether which is not desirable when you are hoping to churn out the (ridiculous) numbers they are aiming for. Wagga already has a huge school and is a fairly busy regional port. Not seeing how that would work either.

Huge news, congrats Toowoomba!! Wonder who will snag the second location...

You would have to thnk that Toowoomba and Tamworth are the 2 logical choices given JB747s reasons above, anything else is unlikely and/or QF marketing spin and PR.

Even though I do love living in this region, I'm not sure of the QF PR that they've had participants express quite the interest in living in Toowoomba - I believe one of the major reasons that we got the pilot academy is mainly our proximity to Brisbane. By the time the academy is built, those that are connected with it will be able to drive about 2mins up the road and onto the newly constructed bypass and being in the Brisbane CBD, or BNE within 90 mins (depending on city traffic).

The other places proposed were presumably just used to drive better concessions out of the two preferred locations.

Well the ADF pilot school (BFTS) has moved from Tamworth to Sale so I imagine there’s a bit of capacity free at Tamworth, and the previous contractor would be keen to re-roll the former facilities. That said they also have no shortage of international customers.
