Is getting there alive a part of the deal ;) :)

Thanks for posting

lol. China Airlines has improved and its actually a decent way to fly cheap on Business Class. Plus you get to fly on the new A350 at least between Sydney and Taipei.

No problem. There is more deals on the website and if interested business class deals from Singapore/Bangkok/Kuala Lumpur/Hong Kong/Jakarta

:)

Would have no hesitation in flying with them again and have booked my parents holiday to the US at Christmas time with them. Their A350 especially is a wonderful product. The only slight downer I find with them is their early arrival into TPE with a long transit time

I would put China Airlines up with the Middle Eastern carriers. In fact in some respects they are better, and a lot cheaper. $4250 MEL to LGW in J and $2250 in Y+.

Wouldn’t know, our corporate insurance has them on a ‘brown’ list which means if other options exist we cannot fly them...

They are based out of Taipei in Taiwan. They are not permitted to overfly PRC. Could that be a reason, as PRC has been trying to hinder them.

Nope, safety grading. Doesn’t really bother me as so many others options :)

Perhaps it's time for agents to review their safety assessments. I know they like to sound important and 'value add' making these lists up, but the data and analysis doesn't seem to support them in this case: China Airlines - Airline Ratings

But I guess your agent's list would have to be considered in context.. if they also banned Air France, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Asiana, Korean, Qantas, Emirates, British Airways and the likes then they might be taking a very cautious approach.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how they generate those safety ratings?

Without aiming to attack you at all, just curious if (according to the safety company) EK and AF are brown or DO NOT FLY or "good to go"?

Why would it be attacking me? I’m not the multi national insurer that dictates my multi national employer’s travel policy - I have no skin in the game and don’t really care so don’t worry :)

AF I don’t actually know but yes they allow us to fly EK without restriction as far as I know. I can try and check AF if you are that interested.

Some people are overly touchy so I just thought I'd emphasise it!
Thanks for the reply, not that curious, just vaguely interested. :)

I would be interested. EK in particular, are not on my personal fly list. Recent events in New York and Moscow, not to mention Dubai, should make most people think...twice at least.

with China Airlines' new A350 1-2-1 J class at par with CX and AA J, and only costing about 4k for long haul such as LON and or USA east coast,

scheduling and route connection is the last draw saving the big ones like QF, CX and ME3 charging 8k for London and 12k in J to USA...
and make their PEY offering for 3-4k seems futile.

one thing I always notice about the EK crew is that their uniform / appearance seems to be on a bad shape, uniforms are creased, and they are almost always oversize as well.

It is well known that CI use to have one major haul loss (+ loss of life) incident once a year, the most (in)famous being CI611. They have improved dramatically in recent years but you do wonder if the $$$-saving corporate culture that led to those incidents has really changed in all these years or if there is another waiting to happen.

China airline's last fatal crash was over 16 yrs ago.

How about the EK incident where they almost crashed at NY ? and AirAsia's crash ? These happened recently and receive little attention.

Heaps of pax still flies them everyday.

I
if there is another waiting to happen.

It appears AF is allowed on some routes. EK appears to be allowed unrestricted at the moment so the brokers must be satisfied!

I have booked SYD-TPE-JFK return early next month. I looked at their safety record and they appear to have changed both pilot hiring policy and maintenance area. No major incident since 2002 and hiring western civilian pilots rather the ex PRC airforce pilots.

The long stopover in TPE doesn’t worry me as I have APEC card and apparently can get into town very cheaply. I have 12 hours and 18 hours respectively both during the daytime.

For those wanting to book the cheapest deals are through BestJet.com but given their rep I asked if Flight Centre would match, which they were happy to do.

Will write a trip report on return (assuming I make it).....

Peter
