So my question, has anyone successfully brought a golf umbrella through security and on-board a plane? I spoke with the airline and was told it's at the discretion of security.

I have quite regularrily carried 2 golf umbrellas in a round mailing container obtained from Aust post and carried them onboard and put them in the storage above the seats. On occassion I have been refused they can then safely go into the baggage hold.
