I have some award nights bookings with SPG points during Christmas holidays, and then some bookings for Easter 2019 as well. At this stage I am not sure which days I need to stay at the SPG property and which days I have to cancel the bookings(these are separate bookings of one day each). As SPG Award nights are cancellable without penalty up to one day before the check-in date, I may not be able to decide which days to cancel until November or early December.

With the recent announcement of SPG-Marriott merger, most of us know that all the SPG points will be converted to Marriott points at 1:3 ratio, in August. I cannot find any information from their merger website/description about what would happen to my points should I cancel my bookings after August. Does anyone know that the points refund to be back to SPG account(is there any SPG account after August?), or will the points be refunded to the new Marriott account according to the 1:3 ratio? And also the amount of points refunded will be based on the SPG categories(ie. actual SPG points used) or the Marriott designated categories(and I can't find the Marriott Rewards categories of SPG properties as well, does anyone know where I can find information about this)?

Thank you in advance.

There's no specific information that has been released in regards to your specific circumstance, so I think you'd be best to contact Starwood/Marriott directly for a firm answer.

I can only see it happening 2 ways though (with number 1 being the most likely IMO):
  1. Marriott points being refunded based on the category in which the hotel sits within the new award chart.
  2. Marriott points being refunded based on the hotels old SPG category and 3:1 conversion rate.

They should give you back the points you used with appropriate conversion. If you want a definitive answer go to Flyertalk and message one of the Starwood Lurkers. They are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. One did join up AFF some years ago but I doubt active now.

Do you really think they will though drron? It might be unlikely, especially if the Flyertalk conversation around what wiull happen at 1 August on booked Flight + Hotel Point Packages is anything to go by (which will be a big kick in the guts to anyone who has one outstanding if true).

Why wouldn't it be.The reservation has the number of points used so to me it is a no brainer.
Would you expect that if you canceled a paid reservation you would get back a different amount?
A lot of the speculation on FT has always been on the wild side.I take it with a very big grain of salt.If I really want to know I pm a Lurker when it is SPG.They have always been very helpful.

Thanks rock86 and drron. So probably nobody knows what will happen as Marriott hasn't announced it. I just ask to make sure that I have not missed their announcement/details. Looks like asking Marriott may be the best way to go.

I can't find the Marriott Rewards catogories for individual SPG properties after the merger in August. Am I missing something and can someone point me to the right direction?

They haven't released the full list, just a snippet back in April.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks for confirming rock86. I'll keep an eye out for when Marriott will release the SPG hotel categories post August, but I suppose Marriott is being unfair in not releasing it so close to the date of implementation of the merger.
