Hi, I am looking at doing Melbourne to London out mid April and back 2nd week of May next year. When does Qantas offer companion flights? Is it worth waiting till next year to book companion fare or take advantage of what fares are offered now. There is nowhere to compare what the difference of booking companion fare V fares offered right now. As far as upgrade is it better to go through Singapore than Perth to get an upgrade from Premiun Economy to Business. We have the points but our son is a Platinum member and he can request the upgrade for us.

Upgrades are based on the status of the travellers, not of the person requesting the upgrade. So unless you also hold sufficiently high status, you should prepare to fly in the cabin ticketed.

There are so many options these days to get cheap premium tickets to London. ~$4200 will get you full flat beds all the way - which is probably cheaper than Qantas premium economy! Mixed class (fly economy to SIN, KUL or BKK followed by full business class from Asia to Europe) will have you in comfort for as little as $2500-2800 per person. And no mucking around with whether an upgrade will clear or not.

The WP upgrade request reallly only works if WP is travelling with you on same ticket.

Otherwise it’s your FF status that comes into play

Do you need to fly on Qantas and what’s your budget?

Thanks for the replys. No my son is not travelling with us.
Interested to know who will do the trip for $4200 return in business though. Would prefer to do Qantas but this is what this site is all about, so thanks for the comments.

It's probably a little early for May, but expect the usual offerings... Vietnam Airlines, China Airlines, Sri Lankan. They all offer full flat beds, lounges, and certainly the same or slightly better standard of food and service you'd get on Qantas premium economy. Some of the options can have a bit of a layover between flights in one direction. I think that applies to Vietnam airlines on the outbound. But they provide visa, tours and a hotel for you.

If you wanted Qantas for the points, Sri Lankan will give you points and status credits to your QF account as they are part of oneworld.
