Hong Kong Fuel Surcharge Regulation to Bite the Dust?

Qantas is already charging full surcharge on flights to HKG. Surely that's not going to get higher?

Or is it? Remember the many years of fuel going down but surcharges remained and as soon as fuel went up the fuel surcharges went up again.

I think he means flights ex HKG not to HKG.

Just priced an award in EK F:

HKG-DXB-LCA LCA-MLA LIS-DXB-SIN

for HKD1,000 or around AUD170 in co-pay. Ex-Australia it's well over AUD1,000.

Might need to get in quickly.

Yeah, and if exHKG gets deregulated we'll most likely lose the benefit of no fuel surcharges, which will be a massive blow due to the easy accessibility of HKG.

For economy awards there's not much difference booking ex-Aus or ex-HKG.

I booked BNE-HKG last month and the taxes and surcharges were ~$165. I also booked HKG-SYD-BNE and taxes and surcharges were HKD880. Not that long ago I booked HKG-SYD and taxes and surcharges were HKD702 which is ~$120.

And yes some premium awards may end up more expensive.

Agreed, but I think the benefits derived are more applicable to longer multi-leg international trips ex HKG than the hop between HKG-AUS

How are surcharges on a 5 sector return F award to Europe are only marginally more expensive than surcharges on a one way economy award to Australia.

Makes no sense.

This would definitely hurt me if it went ahead.

Agreed; I currently have a QFF award booking LAX-(AA)-xHKG-(QF)-MEL; +++ is USD48.

That is interesting. Does the surcharge regulation still apply when transiting HKG even when ticketed from a different country?

If CX adopted the current QF/BA fuel surcharges (as applied via other ports), ALL CX premium long haul award flights through HKG will be hundreds of dollars more expensive.

Hasn't Qantas always been good with redemptions ex-USA or do they need to involve AA?
Only on AA.
Quite extortionate ++ on QF ex USA-AUS. A lot more than ex AUS-USA.
AA metal, QF points is minimal ++ either way

Generally no or very low fuel surcharges, although there is one (about $80 from memory) on flights to/from Australia.
JAL have regulated fuel surcharges.
It is based on a 2 month average price of fuel in Singapore (converted to Yen at the average exchange rate for the same 2 month period). If that amount is under 6000yen, there is no surcharge.
Prices over 6000 fall into 1000 yen bands. Each surcharge band has varied surcharge amounts based on the zone the flight is to/from.

For flights starting outside Japan, the price bands are based on USD cost instead of JPY in $10 bands.
Surcharge is priced in JPY for tickets sold in Japan, CAD for sales in Canada, GBP for UK, EUR for Europe, AUD for Australia and USD for elsewhere.
