Air New Zealand Delays/Cancellations

NZ departed late 15 April...more than an hour... but we arrived on time at LAX..... I suppose there is LOTS of time to make up a deficit on a Transpac flight (eastbound anyway)

Thursday 19 April 2018 has NZ175, the morning 1035 hours AKL across to PER not having taken off until 1621, which is almost late afternoon. B789 ZK-NZL is predicted to arrive at 1904 hours, 304 minutes behind schedule.

The B789 Trent 1000 engine problems have reared their head again with some NZ flights such as to HND being forced to make fuel stops at airports like BNE, and two B789s withdrawn temporarily.

There are also some cancelled flights in coming days such as NZ175/NZ176 AKL - PER - AKL on ANZAC Day (Wednesday 25 April), NZ177 AKL to PER 26 and 27 April with NZ178 cancelled on the following day back to AKL, as well as NZ103/NZ104 AKL - SYD - AKL on Thursday 26 April and NZ162/NZ161 PER - CHC and return 27-28 April.

Apparently passengers are being rebooked, but one assumes in many cases with a NZ- PER flight this will add at least a couple of hours to a trip as connecting in SYD or MEL is presumably required. A pain!

Problems have expanded. We received an email while still in Houston...advising our 1030pm LAX-AKL flight had been rescheduled to 1050 AM... !!!

The proposed solution from NZ had us spending the night in AKL then on to Oz the following morning. That wouldn't work as we are travelling for pistol shooting competitions - and have no import permits for NZ for our gear......

Call centre was very good...worked to find a decent solution that did NOT impact our existing plans. One extra night in LA, and in the very good TBIT lounge right now waiting to board this DAY flight across the pacific. Weird.

As an aside.... at 8am there were NO lines whatsoever at TBIT security checkpoints. Ghost town.

P.S. Call centre reapplied a Silver UG certificate to the new flight....it cleared at check in.... row 26 to row 3. Very nice.

NZ has listed about six months of changes to its flights due to the additional checks required on the B789 engines (not a problem confined to this airline.)

Many flights are being downgraded (and renumbered) from B789s to, for instance B772s on say AKL - SYD - AKL. There are notes indicating that some passengers may have to travel in a different class (read: downgrading.) One would hope they receive a full refund based on the full fare difference, not some artificially calculated small difference that works in the airline's favour.

Other flights are being retimed. One flight from LAX I looked at was altered to leave 11 minutes and 40 hours earlier.

There must be many travellers who either cannot fit in with such schedule changes or who do so under protest as it curtails a business trip or enjoyment of a holiday.

On Monday 7 May 2018, NZ722 (A320 ZK-OJN, the 0840 hours MEL - AKL that took off at 1231 hours) should arrive at 1757, 222 minutes late.

On what has been a stormy, blustery day in Melbourne, NZ850 (A320 ZK-OJH, the 1800 hours early evening to WLG) took off at 1931. Arrival is predicted as 0053 hours on Saturday 12, 78 late.

Fog in and around Melbourne has not been assisting timekeeping to put it mildly as NZ123 from AKL to MEL (B773ER ZJK-OKN) looks to be arriving on Thursday 28 June 2018 at 1133 hours, 38 minutes late.

Saturday morning 7 July 2018 sees MEL down to using runway 27 (east-west) due to fairly strong winds as NZ891 from CHC (A320 ZK-OJG) arrives at 0837 hours, 42 minutes late.

Wednesday 11 July 2018 finds the quite long AKL - PER NZ175 (B789 ZK-NZC) likely to arrive at 1806 hours, 246 late. The returning flight NZ176 is timetabled to depart at 1935 hours so may be able to achieve this thanks to the long layover programmed in by wise heads at the airline.

By 2000 hours on Friday 20 July the strong winds that had led to SYD being a one runway (east-west) operation for much of the day and early evening had subsided.

However NZ60 (2130 hours SYD to RAR, B789 ZK-NZE) was still taxiing at 2243, so lucky to get out before curfew.

On a windy Monday 23 July 2018 in MEL, NZ124 (scheduled 1210 hours to AKL that was in the sky at 1303 with B773ER ZK-OKN) should arrive at about 1821 hours, 36 late.

Friday 27th July, NZ191 AKL-ADL scheduled for 1050 arrival has been cancelled and so therefore has NZ192 ADL-AKL scheduled to depart at 1205.

In another entry re NZ192 (thank you to jase05 above), on Friday 3 August 2018, NZ192 (B772ER ZK-OKC, the 1205 hours lunchtime ADL to AKL that took off at 1300) should arrive at 1925 hours, 55 late.
